The presence of RMT means there are idiots buying gil, nothing more. It's an indication of wasteful spending on the part of some players, not that the population of the game is thriving.

To be sure. It's complete stupidity, given the fact that most of the population is ridiculously rich. Gil is easy to come by. I can't believe anyone would waste their hard earned money and deal with shady people to buy it. But, apparently, they must if RMT even bothers. Sad.

This isn't necessarily a valid conclusion. The presence of RMT could indicate that a small number of FFXIV players are spending a lot of real world currency on gil, but it also could indicate that a large number of FFXIV players are spending a little real world currency.

Without more concrete numbers the only thing that the presence of RTM almost definitely indicates is that a profit can be made, since there is no other reason for them to be present.

What I can't figure out is why anyone would bother buying gil when it is easy enough to gain through leves and gathering, you gonna be leveling up anyway, so why not do some mining or such on the side?

some people are that lazy is why

why spend an hour gaining 50k gil when they can work for 1 hour irl and buy 1mil gil with it

its really a bad reason, but it almost makes sense to some people who dont have the time to be on but a few minutes a day(yes, people actualy play for up to an hour max a day, those people do exist)

Nah Amy, I think Vanguard said it right:

They have bigger MMOs they can profit off of. The amount of time they sink into this game IMO would hardly be a good payoff if they thought this game was in the state it was, say, 8 or so months ago.

To explain this, it helps to think of the player base as consisting of three types of players:

1] players who have a lot of time to invest in the game (allowing them to accumulate a lot of ingame currency) but little real world money
2] players who don't have a lot of time (and therefore little ingame currency), but a substantial amount of real world money
    3] everyone in between

The second group is the economic gold mine because they may want to look cool or keep up with their freinds in the virtual world but can't because they don't have the time to invest playing--so they will sometimes pay real world money to compensate for that.

And group #2 is the reason why the F2P model seems to be booming right now.

    And hats.
