Y'all piling too much hate on the OP on this one.

From what I can see, it's mostly because of his attitude and his refusal to take personal responsibility. The OP isn't exactly "wrong" for having expired retainers holding sentimental items (which was so sentimental he forgot it existed...), but this isn't SE's fault or problem either. The guideline for retainers clearly lays out that you can't access them if you stop paying for them so it's not like SE pulled a sneaky on him.

This thread would have been better received if it was a calm, collected PSA about not storing important items on paid retainers, but instead he decided to make it a diatribe.

Prettymuch this - Square Enix is offering a free transfer, evidently with some necessary rules about items that can't be taken cross-server. It's an inconvenience but it's hardly "screwing him over".

It's unfortunate that in this case it means paying to resubscribe the extra retainer to access that 'long-term storage', but that's only happened because we're allowed to let retainer subscriptions lapse in the first place.


Most likely the invitations are banned from transfer because they're not programmed to recognise which server they were issued on - under normal circumstances there'd be no need for it, so if all it records is "let this person into the chapel at 3:00 on Wednesday" and then you move to a different server still carrying that instruction... well, you've just got a ticket to crash a random person's wedding. Or possibly the game if there isn't actually a wedding scheduled for that time but you try to go in anyway, and it turns out the game can't handle that.

An old 'keepsake' invitation isn't going to risk that of course, but they probably just have to block the item in general, or haven't considered that people might keep expired ones.

(Nothing wrong with keeping it for sentimental purposes but storing it on your last, least-accessed retainer, by the way. It's still there and not thrown out. Not much different to putting a real-world keepsake in a box in the back of the cupboard.)

Just so you know, there is a way to fix this without spending money.

If you empty and release enough of your retainers before the retainer you're trying to access you can make the retainer you're trying to access become active and accessible (Releasing your first retainer would make your second take slot one and your third take slot two. Releasing your second retainer would make your third take slot two.).

It may not be ideal, but it is free and doable.

This is all on you, OP. You should have emptied out your retainer before you let it expire.

So when you said your sub expires in July do you mean your getting billed again that month or quitting the game? If the latter then why bother with the transfer to begin with?
