I don't mind a wardrobe system except IMO you need to have equipped the item at least one time before you can use that model for fashion.

I shouldn't be able to look like i am using Ifrit Cane if I have never earned one.

Of course the wardrobe system has to have limitations. You would need to have the item to use it. I wouldn't want someone to use the high end weapon's .dat when they are not even 50.

It'd still be imbalanced in favor of materia because materia'd gear is in general way easier to get and doesn't require 7 other people.

Okay, but how many people are actually going to make all their gear three slot materia? I can tell you it is very few. I see very minimal amount of people with triple slotted materia on their armor, and even when they do, it is still only 1-2 pieces on them. I still believe balance is there, or make a balance on how rare/ex. armor should be compared to materia armor.

It needs to be setup that materia armor is ultimately better, but it has to be difficult enough that rare/ex. is still an equally viable option. How this can be implemented properly? Who knows. That is why I let SE do the thinking on that one.

    Why?

Why should sitting in town playing slot machine give you the best of the best stuff?

You keep talking about balance but there shouldn't be balance between crafted and dropped gear. Dropped gear should be better because it takes more people and requires a pulse to get.

What do you think myself and my 7 friends are wearing while we are trying to get our U/U gear? Crafted gear has a place, but IMO gear you get from high level NM like Ifrit should be > crafted items, period.

true, but then again I still prefer job gear to be craftable so materia can put on them, for more custom as I dont want class gear to beat job gear but if job can use class gear then I have nothing more to say

edit: if job can use class gear, WTB bow-harp recipe and etc

From this interview (at the bottom)

ZAM: The implementation of jobs is coming up. Will job quests be similar to FFXI? Also, how will job-specific armor be obtained?

Yoshida: We are currently plotting job quests, so I cannot reveal too much. There will be many different stages involving different trials and stories. There will be job-specific gear obtained during the process of job quests and in battle content. All of this will be available in patch 1.21.

ZAM: How will job-specific armor compare to other high-level gear in the game?

Yoshida: Job-specific armor will have higher abilities when used by its specific job. All job quests must be completed in order to obtain job-specific armor, so they will be difficult to obtain. However, we plan on having gear created by attaching multiple materia surpass job-specific armor in quality.
Now maybe people will use certain pieces of the job specific armor to stack stats to be more narrowly focused but it would be a sad day when everyone starts to look homogenized.
