I really thought dancer would be a healer than heals through dealing damage and that would have been interesting but someone on reddit pointed out that it might be had for times when the bosses aren't targetable but still doing damage.

Some healers that melee or deal physical damage have some sort of resource that they build up for hits in order to heal. It could have worked something like that. I remember specifically that's how the Warrior Priest from Warhammer Online worked, and I think it's opposite the Disciple of Khaine worked like that too, but I didn't play Chaos in that game =p

The RIFT Chloromancer was a mage class that had a healing "soul" (in RIFT you could have 3 souls and use points to level up a tree much like WOW's talent tree, but with 9 plates which you could swap.) It basically healed a single, selectable target by an amount that you did in damage to the enemy (DoTs, DDs, anything that did Life damage and most of the Chloromancer's kit did Life damage) and then it had a few other abilities that healed little ticks of damage to others in range. Basically there were numbers all over the place when you were doing damage and healing and it was kinda fun to see all the number chaos all over the place.

But, err, back on the subject. (I assume, as the ones I am familiar with did)Most "Melee" healers can also use casting heals for times when they are unable to melee for some reason. It's not their primary way of healing, but it helps in those situations so you're not left out in the cold. I'm not much of a melee healer type myself, but I have tried out a few just to try something new. I can definitely see the allure, even if it's not my particular cup of tea.

"Then what is magic for?" Prince Lir demanded wildly. "What use is wizardry if it cannot save a unicorn?"
Schmendrick did not turn his head. With a touch of sad mockery in his voice, he said, "That's what heroes are for."
