Tanks are in big demand and having a new job might get more people to tank.

I am SO glad Gunbreaker is a tank. I feel it would probably fall completely flat for me as a DPS, just like Machinist and Samurai did.
Tanks are much more fun and have much more going on.
Sorry to derail but Tidus was not a tank, nor was he a Paladin. He was a Warrior/Time Mage. He had quick attacks, a few buffs and time spells. Auron was the Knight/Samurai tank job. He had Threaten/Provoke/Guard, Sentinel, as well as the usual Knight "Break" skills, and a few Samurai moves, and two-handed sword like FF5 Knights
This is why I think, it would have been even better, if they had made 2 Samurai Jobs back then.
Samurai with the heavy Armor as a Tank and Ronin with Medium Armor as a DPS Job.
And now Gunbreaker als a Tank and Gunblader (is that a word?) as a DPS Job.
This would bring the cool Toys to both Groups from my View.
And with 5.0 they could have brought us a Dps/Healer again, like the Summoner and Scholar.
Maybe a new way to work with the Bluemage...or ^maybe the Dancer.
Yes, I like the Idea of a single Job being able to go two ways. It feels like a Class is more something of a flexible Concept and not just a linear Path.

You should really try tanking. It's like DPS but easier and you stay in front of mobs. It's not bad once you overcome your fears. No queues, high demand, easy rotations, less repetitive, you're a special snowflakeyou can eat a lot more damage.. You will like it!!
This was something that always felt a bit bad for me when playing Tanks.
Especially, what Yoshis Team did to the Dark Knight.
Easier Rotations can be fine for the Tanks if the focus is somewhere else, but spamming a single DPS Combo felt like they made this Class for a Wii Remote.
Tanks Swaps were nice in HW. They appeared and sometimes not.
Now it is like "You love tanks swaps, right. So lets put a Tank swap into your Tank swap to make the tanks swaps swap the Tank swaps."
I on the contrary i'm super hyped that gunbreaker is a tank, i love tanking but the only class that really appealed to me was dark knight, sadly it's getting kinda boring so a new toy with a personal weapon of mine is refreshing

And miss out on red mage? No thanks! This is why I think, it would have been even better, if they had made 2 Samurai Jobs back then.

No, the Rdm would still be a Part of the Game. Just give the Game more Jobs two Roles.
I just have no clue, if people would have liked him as a Job with a DPS Role and a Healer Role or just being a DPS only Class, like we have him at the moment.
Maybe...perhaps...I was never so deep in his Lore, that I could say if this is a great or a bad thing.
Could be nice, could be bad...I have no clue. ^^
You see that I did not drop the Dancer for 5.0 and instead whished he would be a Class that can be a Helaer and a DPS. And the Gunblade Job can be a Tank and a DPS.
