I remember renting FF1 (US) when I was about 5 years old. I loved the game but wasn't old/mature enough to really 'get it' and didn't end up re-playing & finishing it until 15 years later.
In all those years in between, I had finished II & III (both US), Mystic Quest, VII, VIII & X. I put 100+ days worth of play time into XI and few dozen hours into XII but never 'finished' either of them.
I've recently purchased a PSP and have been working through IV(US II) and all it's post-game games.
Honestly, I couldn't imagine possessing the willpower to push through all of them one after another. You'd miss out on so many other great games!

i have finished all the main story games except FF13 (not counting MMOs) i have not finished them in order in fact FF3 was the last one i finished. however i have finished most games multiple times and can remember quite clearly the story and the gameplay of each game. imo FF1 and FF2 were quite forgettable FF3 was when things started to pick up. each game after 3 started to get better till FF6 (FF4 had a better story but FF5 had the better gameplay job system is one of the best thing FF ever came up with) once we get to FF6 and FF7 i really can't split these games on how good they were, they are both classics. if i got stuck on a dessert island i would want these 2 games with me. then FF8 and FF9 were ok/good games, but on the back of FF6 and FF7 they had huge shoes to fill and were somewhat overshadowed (even tho FF9 was bassicly a remake of FF4, and i thought FF4 had one of the best stories going) which then leads on to FF10, which i thought was another masterpiece every bit as good as FF6 and FF7. 10 had it all great story, great looking, great gameplay (the sphere grid was a cool way to level up it was new and trying to get round it made leveling up so addictive it should have been illegal) side quests were compelling monster hunting was genius. and SIN need i say more?? FF10 was great but that where the good times end. FF12 was the start of a down hill spiral that lead to FF13
of course this is just my opinion and views on the FF series. i know other ppl with have vastly different opinions on these games and how the series have progressed. but that my thoughts for you![]()

I've been playing since the beginning in roughly the NA release order until FFVII where I started buying the JP releases first and then the NA releases -- finishing both.
FFI - NA : NES
FFIV - NA : SNES
FFVI - NA : SNES
FFVII - JP, NA : PS1
FFV - JP : SuperFamicom (Still have it in near-mint condition with the box and everything!)
FFVIII - JP, NA : PS1
FFT - NA : PS1
FFV, - NA: PS1
FFIX - JP,NA : PS1
FFI&II (dawn of souls) - NA : GBA
FFX - JP,NA : PS2
FFX-2 - NA : PS2
FFXI - NA:PC, PS2
FFXII - JP,NA : PS2
FFIII - NA : DS (and now iPhone)
FFXIII - NA: PS3
FFXIV - NA: PC
In addition I've played both Dissidia games, FFTA, FFTA2, FFXII:RW, FFVII:CC, FFIV(DS), FFIV & FFVI (PS1), and even Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (which was beyond terrible).
Overall, my favorites have been: (played many times): FFI, FFVI, FFIX, FFXI, and FFXII
My least favorites: (won't play again): FFII, FFV, FFX, and FFXIII.
I've played every numbered Final Fantasy including their respective sequels/prequels and a few spin-offs here and there. I haven't finished FFI-III since I got to those later in life and couldn't stand the sluggish pace of strict turn-based gameplay. Had I played through them when they came out I might have appreciated them more. I can't really say the game mechanics evolved as much as they were iterated upon post Final Fantasy IV. It wasn't really until they finally dropped Sakaguchi and Uematsu post FFIX that I really saw the series start to evolve in different ways.
FFX going linear and introducing the CTB system with the sequel revisiting a world rebuilt, while FFXI went straight up MMO, with FFXII doing interesting things with the story and making the world feel massive, then FFXIII giving the battle system a 5-hour energy drink and focusing on flawed characters and a generally bleak storyline. People will bitch and moan about which entry is the best and everything after it is crap, but watching the series evolve over the past ten years has been pretty exciting and I've loved every bit of it. What with Japanese development FINALLY catching up to next-gen development, it'll be interesting to see what they do with future entries in the series after Bioware and Bethesda have entered the console arena.
Sort of a sidebar to the actual topic, but meh.
On that note however, why do people seem to think FFVersusXIII, a game that at this point seems to be nothing but vaporware, is going to be the game to "revive the glory" of the Final Fantasy series anyway?
Well I've beaten them consecutively growing up. I've been through every 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13.
I didn't bother with 10-2, and 11 doesn't count, never played tactics and never played any of the side games on gamecube or whatever else like crystal chronicles and all that. They were pretty much always all Final Fantasy especially after 4 I think, maybe 3, thats when a lot of staple mobs were in place and were consistently repeated as what we know as final fantasy. Final Fantasy 6 was the ultimate game though, really brought everything out and set a standard for Final Fantasy as how it should be as a complete game, and I think every FF after that followed that concept of a game. Albeit new battle system, story, characters but you know what I mean.
And like Lucifer, I'm sure all uber fans do this with one or two titles. I personally replay ff6 once a year, and sometimes 8 (Even though it was far from one of the good ones mechanically, it just hit me right personally.)
I also wanted to add that even though ff10 was a good game, I think it was a step back from ff9, just as ff8 was a stepback from ff7, other than those two, every game improved on the genre in my opinion. ff12 was a magnificent game and I guess I'm still deciding whether I think ff13 is a stepback to 12 or not. Most of you might say it is a stepback but I would think about it a bit more. ff13 tried a new route to how the game played out, a new route that SE has hinted they will follow from now on, so maybe in the coming titles we'll see a master blaster as a result, who knows?
I would actually love to do an evolution playthrough. I pretty much bounce around between 2 or 3 FF games at all times.
Currently playing XIV, XIII (prep for XIII-2) and FFIV: TAY.
And a little Kingdom Hearts II on the side (mostly gummi ship fighting)
This would be a good way to dust off my collection, and probably save me a fortune on games next year![]()
