I rarely look up guides for encounters in this game, and go in blind most of the time, be it a dungeon, raid, extreme mode.
"Back in my day" we played these games without access to testing servers and the Internet, and we learned all encounters as well and progressed through MMOs.
You can be prepared, you can watch 100 videos to have some understanding what the fight is going to bring you, but unless you actually do the fight and bring it all together, that preparation is for naught.

As long as people learn during the encounter, and it's clearly said that you're new, and newcomers are welcome, it's all good.

I'd recommending Largessing as many Di A. Benefits as you can - you should be able to squeeze in 2 per Largesse, and you can do this every 60 seconds. Don't forget you can also use CU for HoTs, and CU is more potent than A Benefic or A Helios.
I would do that had I have trust in any of the tanks i encounter to take aggro away from me

I do realize that Diurnal would be useful but 9 times out of 10 the tanks never pick aggro off me so I pretty much resorted to shielding on mobs cuz then I wouldn't have to worry about regen ticks attracting aggro towards me

Okay, first post here. So I started my first run on "The Orbonne Monastery." I don't know much about the run, because I'm not a big fan at looking at guides for normal duties (not savage/ultimate/BA). Mostly because I don't like to outright spoil fights and learn as I go. I really only look at guides for obviously hard dungeons that usually require prog parties to learn and document. However I will ask for mechanic tips in fights, because some mechanics, like the second boss in this duty, have some unclear mechanics if you're new (shield on judgement, sword on barriers/shielded monsters). After a run, I generally pick it up quickly, but sometimes I like to not be confused. So I asked...

The first response I get is, "Didn't you watch the guide video?" Well, again, I don't watch guides for normal dungeons, it ruins the surprise of bosses and I prefer learning as I go. I finally get some mechanic advice, which was great. I still failed some of the mechanics because sometimes not everything is as straight forward as it seems, however some people proceeded to bash me because of it. Generally, I can take this, but the thing that peeved me the most, was the mentor in my party kept harassing me afterwards. Once I get comfortable with some of the boss mechanics, I may do a callout/suggestion, because I wasn't the only one who previously failed mechanics. When I do this, the mentor again harasses me. This mentor blamed everyone every time they failed/died on a mechanic that wiped or killed several people. He never gave out suggestions, or helpful advice.

We got to the third boss (The Lightning God iirc), after the first wipe, I got a handle on some of the mechanics. I was actually leading the group (people following me) before we decided to abandon. This guy still proceeded to harass me, saying things like, "Oh, now you know the mechanics huh?" I've not once reported someone for being toxic, generally because I understand people have bad days, I do too. However the Mentor tag shouldn't give you that much leniency. A Mentor is expected to, if not be helpful, at least not be toxic. Sadly, the only person I've ever had to report. Mentors need to be held to a higher standard.

But what are you're thoughts on this? Should I always look at guides, even from simple dungeons? And if I don't, do I deserve to be bashed, even by mentors, for asking for mechanics advice?
Sadly as people stated here, most people become mentors just to have their little burger king crowns next to their names to jerk off to

You honestly did the right thing, you are not obligated to look at guides for duty finder stuff especially when they're still doable on your first run,it's just so many mentors nowadays are too entitled and want to force people to play the game THEIR way rather than trying to be helpful or at the very least be nice if they're not willing to teach

Granted I'm not saying you shouldn't look up guides period as they do help regardless but I went to Rabanastre my first time blind as a Dark Knight and the run went pretty well, same with Ridorina Lighthouse

And even if u saw a guide u need to experience the instance first and mistakes will happen regardless if people saw a guide or not

In Ser Grinnaux fight the samurai doesn't run, but walks to the boss, doesn't even autoattack, just stands around and gets hit in the face by the straight-line attack that creates a black hole behind the player. And of course upon Faith Unyielding (or whatever it's called) she got knocked into the portal. I was like... well, I'm doing more dps than she, and I'm not gonna waste MP on an obvious leech.

We continue with the next corridor, the samurai more interested in blaming me for her death than actually contributing anything. The red mage isn't doing much better, so basically me and the tank carry their butts, until I decide I've had enough and would rather not deal with this crap past midnight. Both dps were mentors. Colour me surprised. </sarcasm>
Its precisely because of asshats like these two that I initially despised the mentor system....and its kind of also why I became a mentor myself if only to show the community that not all of us are like this

I've met some geniunely awesome mentors on both duty and party finder, heck one mentor I met on my God Kefka clear was what inspired me to become one in the first place because of how awesome and kind they were.

Honestly I think Square and the GMs should be more strict with how the mentor status is implemented, both in the way u get it and the punishment for toxic mentors.

There needs to be more requirements to become one than just checking off a list of instances and at least a punishment of revoking the mentor status from someone if they got too many reports for harassment and toxicity

MEMEntors at it again. They REALLY should replace these crowns for something less appealing to people that only want to look more important than others. A humble watering can like people suggested many times. You'll notice how the amount of mementors drop significantly after that.

I've not registered with Reddit yet but this is making me want too. The cussing makes it 10x more hilarious.

If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.

Unless the dungeon / Trail has the word "Extreme" or "Savage", feel free to go in blind.

Even if they are Extreme/Savage runs, the first week or so they come out feel free to run them blind, too. At this point there are no guides (though you'll still hear mentors spit polishing their shiny crown while screaming at people to look at guides on day 1 of the patch lol)

Always report toxic mentors. The more we can weed out, the better.

The simplest solution is to wait to apply your regen until after the tank establishes aggro, which you should do anyways. The ticks by themselves will not rip hate on mobs if your tank hits all of them with multiple Flashes/Overpowers/Unleashes/Abyssal Drains. If you're applying your regens before they have chance to establish aggro, that's improper play on your part. Just wait.

I've been under the weather all week, but I'm feeling better today so I decided to do some random content for funnsies. I queue up into o12n (since it's been a while since I was in there), and it was... something else.

4 people died to the first knockback when Omega-M turns into Omega-F, including my cohealer. I was like "okay" - Swift+Raise them, Thin Air raise the two more, they don't raise the fourth so I raise them, too. And the deaths kept coming because the AST just wouldn't heal. I understand waiting for your MP to tick up, but when you're at at least half, toss out some Helios' at least. They weren't the biggest issue though.

    Their BRD friend was.

BRD friend wearing the i290 Antiquated pants died to the Optimized Fire, and tried to say I clipped them. Well, one, if I'd clipped you with mine, we'd both have died. Two, the tried to say I kept killing them, and I was like "The first three times you died? No." Their response was to ask their AST friend. I just replied with, "The first time you were blown off the edge. The others you stood in AOEs. How are any of those my fault?"

Needless to say, they died twice more after that (standing in things again), and I made no effort to raise or heal them. Left it all to their AST friend (hey, and they still died).

I really wanted to say, "I'd like to ask your AST friend why they aren't healing." When I'm 3 times your HPS, there's a problem. And it's not like they were dealing damage.

    Terrible White Mage

So I queed up for leveling roulette as a Warrior. This meant the highest level dungeon I could do at the time was Brayflox longstop. However I wound up in Copperbell mine which was started without me as I went to get water after accepting the start up. Less than 30 seconds gone and the party was already charging ahead without the tank lead by the White Mage. Now I should preface the rest of this by saying that the White Mage has a level 70 Paladin on that character meaning they should know how dungeoning works, Tanks up front pulling Aggro.

This player did not follow this leading to them forcing mass pulls repeatedly. By the time we got to the second boss I was being lazy because I was fed up with it, however after the second boss was when it got back. I decided to sit and wait watching what the white mage did, unsurprisingly they pulled everything without me there and continued to run in circles forcing the dps to help them fight everything as I just sat and watched. I admit I could have handled this better however I wanted to prove a point. This point was apparently lost on the White Mage as they let me die immediately at the next mob and said and I quote "Don't need you, you need me. I'll put you in your place if you act like that." When called out on being Toxic their response was only "Toxic Vs. Toxic." Followed by a "you Do you." when I said I was proving a point.

Now we get into the final boss after this with no trouble and after beating the boss the healer immediately leaves. Now I have nothing against the DPS they were nothing if not supportive as they both aggreed that the healer was not acting as a healer and instead trying to act like a tank. To be proper I did ask both their permissions to post this on the Tales From Duty finder post and they said it's fine.

The notion that "it's low level so it doesn't matter" ultimately hurts people who are new and actually trying to learn their job/role. Please, don't be like this healer.
