I've seen a lot of posts lately from people dissatisfied with current class changes, wishing that the dev team had just gone ahead and replaced classes with full-on jobs. They say that jobs will make classes useless, or that classes are an annoying mechanic, or that cross-classing skills is pointless anyway so why bother? I strongly disagree with all of these arguments and wanted to let the devs know that there are still a lot of people who love the Armoury system and would be heartbroken if it were taken away.
The Armoury system was one of the main things that drew me to the game in the first place. The flexibility of mixing and matching abilities to create your own play-style was something I had always found lacking in other single-job MMOs; even in games like FFXI, where you could play any job and supplement it with half the skills of another, I had always wished I could just pick and choose subjob abilities from multiple subjobs in order to better fit the way I wanted to fight.
The Armoury system is an ideal way to address this problem, and although it has its drawbacks (initially too free-form and lacking class definition, now erring on the more rigid side but improving class identity), it still presents players with a lot of options to customize the way they want to play at any given time (even after the 1.20 changes). For example, on my Pugilist I can focus on high accuracy DoT, raw power DD, evasion tanking, damage mitigation, or a balanced jack-of-all-trades just by switching up the abilities I have set, and these options make my character more versatile for various setups and more exciting to play. By choosing a class rather than a job, I may not be the ultimate DD or the ultimate tank, but I can do all of them proficiently, which is worth a lot to me.
I know some people think that players will inevitably min/max and declare that thus and such are the best 10 abilities to cross-class, leading to uniformity. Others argue that because certain abilities (i.e. Sentinel and Raise) are so useful, the Armoury system means players will be expected to level classes they don't care about just to be properly prepared. Both of these are very real problems, but I think with careful tweaking and balancing they can be managed. Plus, it seems like the introduction of the job system should solve them entirely, given the greater restrictions on cross-classing that are imposed when players switch from classes to jobs. Players who don't want to deal with the drawbacks of cross-classing can simply play more specialized jobs instead.
However, for those of us who do enjoy the flexibility of classes and the opportunity to create our own unique set of skills, the Armoury system is a breath of fresh air in a world of MMOs that lock you into one job and one role for your character's whole life. I would hate to see such a unique approach taken away because some people feel it's not useful anymore, or it's holding back content that they really wanted instead. Jobs are an excellent way to build on the class system and allow people to perfect certain roles, but classes still have a place in this game, and I for one hope it stays that way.
