I wanted to switch my main to RDM since it has no positionals and no DoTs to worry about... it's basically the perfect job to me.... but those queue times lol. They are worse than melee DPS by a long shot lol.I think the main issue with this argument of whether GNB should be tank or melee dps really just devolves to how similar the two roles are, thematically speaking. In attempt to word that a bit better with some examples...
With the exception of Paladin and Ninja (and even then there are things like NIN being a tank accidentally in FFXI, so YMMV there lol), you could reasonably make arguments as to why every tank currently could have been a melee DPS and vice versa. DRG? The lance itself is generally a defensive weapon; with it you have a wider range of attack that enemies cannot carelessly meander into, for example, and thus they'd have to mind you over other swordier foes. MNK? Fistfighters generally don't punch people in the butt; I see Jackie Chan end up face-to-facing people way more than him grabbing positionals, MNK should be tank. SAM? Well there's a can of worms, since two years ago the tank community was acting very much like the melee DPS community is acting today when SAM was announced as a DPS. But in XIV's own terms, the one facing down Zenos in the trailer for Shadowbringers is a Samurai.
Warrior? Enough people pretend it's a DPS already. Cleave straight through your foes in a bloody display of dominance--of course it's a DPS! DRK? The job whose big claim to fame is hurting himself to hurt others? That's clearly melee DPS right there. Gunbreaker? ITS A GUN. AND A SWORD. I CAN SHOOT YOU AND STAB YOU WITH ONE MOTION. DPS.
So the arguments "It doesn't seem like it should be a tank" and "It was tanky in previous games so it should be a tank" both feel weak to me, because the fantasy of these roles are very, very close to the same so of course any job that could be considered for one can probably also be considered for the other.
To answer the thread's topic: No, my main will probably stay Red Mage. However, I have made an alt character with the specific purpose of maining either Dark Knight or Gunbreaker for 5.0.
So...yes? And no.
Nope, Paladin main for life =)
I'm not sure I get your point. The game treats all red DPS classes the same, it doesn't matter if you queue up as a magical, physical ranged or physical melee DPS, your queue times are the same (assuming you have the same selection of duties available to you of course).
I might tinker with it a bit, but I'm not expecting to main it. Judging by the demo shown at the Paris keynote, it seemed kinda lackluster.
Im Hyped af, Im just waiting 5.0 and already got my Ucob/Uwu token for the gunblade
Release at 28 June, 29 June I will get my GBN up to 80
They showed like the combo 1-2-3 (with different camera angle) and an ability defensive, so nearly nothing (and one emote).
I did the same for my Dancer !
Gotta stay edgy Dank Knight coz they are the marketing tactic that everyone needs to be informed of my edgy dankness.
I know folks in my FC are very interested in swapping to Gunbreaker as a tank, one friend of mine is absolutely ecstatic at a chance to have an actual gunblade melee job and he wants to swap from dps to tank full time to accomplish it. Another few didn't really want to level a tank but now that they know about Gunbreaker they've developed an interest in trying it out.
Actually it doesn't. The game tries to match melee dps with ranged dps. I can queue for Orbonne monastary as a RDM and I get a estimated wait time of 17 maybe 20 mins. Same as if I queued on BRD. However if I queue as a SAM my estimated wait time is 5 mins.
