slang doesnt make it synonymous. sex is what you were born as, gender is your role in society. the entire argument of gender identity can be resolved by making a clear distinction between these two terms as both sides are correct. if you have male genitalia you are a male, but your mind is not constrained to biology and you can "feel" like whatever you want.

It is synonymous in that usage, which is the primary definition for "gender" in my 1992 dictionary (Collins pocket edition) - "the state of being male or female; sex." (Secondary definition: grammatical gender - which is the primary definition in my 1964 Oxford dictionary.) It isn't marked as a slang term.

You use "sex" and "gender" separately when you are discussing the differences between one's physical sex and their mental gender. When not making that distinction, it is acceptable English to use "gender" as a synonym for physical sex, and it's a lot easier to 'go with it' than take over a discussion with an argument on semantics.


I'm not going to continue this argument about the technicalities of whether it's proper usage or not, so I will just leave it at pointing out that the first screen of the game's character creation process says "Select your character's race and gender."


I'll also add, though not get into a long conversation about it, that while there are "two physical sexes", it's entirely possible and scientifically documented that some individuals are intersex, falling physically between the two.

just because people use it wrong doesnt mean its right, the 90s is why so many people are confused today, when you muddle everything together thats what causes issues when trying to make a distinction because then you get what modern politics has turned into, no facts, only feelings. and intersex is a birth defect, not a biological sex which is binary.

While I can't think of any examples off-hand, isn't it the case that some of the voiced lines in the game have two different recordings, one referring to the Warrior of Light using female terms, the other male? If that's the case, then adding a genderless race would mean those lines would need a third recording - something particularly awkward if they need to go back and re-hire all the voice talent they left behind when they changed the voice actors between ARR and HW.

I just don't see them going to the trouble. I wouldn't put it past them to give us an all-female race, or an all-male race, but not a gender-neutral race. Or, at least, if we do get a gender-neutral race, the race as a whole will identify as one gender or the other (like Galka being "male" in FFXI).

they already did, the viera from ff12 dont have males. unless they want to break the lore, the race coming out with the new expansion is all female.

Viera is a race in the Final Fantasy series, mainly in Ivalice. They first appeared in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. All viera that have appeared in the franchise have been female, although male viera do exist.

Arguably, biological sex isn't binary, as you can get people with chromosome disorders, where someone can be XXY, XXX, XYY or X0. And even these categories aren't neat and tidy, as some people might only have parts of those chromosomes. They wouldn't fit in the usual XY or XX categories

If it is going to be genderless, at least make the character both beautiful and handsome at the same time. I guess you could try and merge Male and Female Omega together and call it a day. And no, I am not talking about the Final Omega result. Lol!

As another non-binary, I would like it, but depends heavily on the design choices.

However, game-design-wise, I agree it would be too difficult to code and develop, not to mention the trappings if we're talking gender-neutral (as in, no obvious characteristics like the Bangaa or a more robotic race) or androgynous (so both male and female features).

key word "disorder." biological sex is binary, disorders and defects arent apart of the design but are anomalies. sex is binary, you are born with male genitalia or female genitalia, your gender can be whatever you want, like i said the mind isnt constrained by biology.
