I shall add two more or less nice stories from yesterdays mentor roulettes then!
Both are from Brayflox NM, a dungeon I actually quite like! Both times I went in as scholar (as I always do for mentor roulettes) and both times I wished I'd gone tank...
First one is in progress, everyone is a sprout and only the level 32 ninja has at least a class at 50, so both the tank and the other dps are probably brand new to the dungeon. And they're french, which is slightly unfortunate, because the tank has no real idea how to fullfill that role yet. Not a huge problem, even though one would hope that someone had figured out the concept of "flash" at this point, but oh well, thats what auto-translate is for, right?
I construct a little: "Tank, (Please use(Flash)" type of thing and hope for the best.
The best never happens.
We still make it through the second boss, with everyone tanking - but thats still something me and Selene can heal through.
We get to the open part, I put a flag down on the map to give everyone a sense of where we want to go, since they seemed all very confused and ask them to be careful of the roaming mobs. We kinda make it through the first few pulls and then... the tank takes off, running into several groups of mobs, but still not using flash. I'm tanking 3, the dragoon gets beaten up by 2, 2 others are chewing on my poor fairy, the ninja and the tank both have one mob. Its not something that I can heal with only physick and adlo. We die and I ask the tank to use flash again (using auto translate ofc). The ninja is frustrated aswell, seeing how we dont get any sign from the tank that they're even reading the chat. Instead they charge in again - same thing happens, aggro is all over the place, AoEs are not being dodge and my fairy does a better job at tanking than that paladin. Wipe.
This time, I decide not to follow that tank into certain death until he gives a clear sign that he understands what he has to do, so I just stand in the second bossroom with the two dps, typing another explantion into the chat, while watching how the tank - apparently unaware his party is not following him - charges in again, probably pulls everything yet another time and dies.
And then hes gone. We didnt votekick or anything, he just quit.
I offer to go along with no tank and small pulls executed by me and we actually make it through the third boss when a new tank shows up.
At least this guy know how to tank, even though he has this habit of big pulls - which is a bit... mmh... well, its an ARR leveling dungeon... both dps dont have an AoE, the tank does, fair enough, but our best bet is my bane. Damage is still fairly low, so pulling two groups isnt a real problem, but its no real gain either.
I have to admit that I was pretty annoyed about that paladin - okay, he was new. Okay, he didnt understood his job yet. But instead of doing this one simple thing that he should have been doing for the past 5 dungeons or so, he just dropped out...
The second run was a little less annoying - this time we got a level 60+ DRK from the start - but again the type of tank who thinks they always have to pull big. At least this time we had a bard, so some kind of AoE, but pulling 10+ mobs still doesnt work. And no, it doesnt work the second time either, after we've died to such a pull and I told you that this cant be healed nor properly dps'd with the classes we have present.
A little less annoying, but still... I main a tank myself, I know the joy of big pulls, but there is a time and a place for them. The time is usually past level 40 when most classes have some sort of AoE and the place arent ARR leveling dungeons when you, as tank, are still rocking level one accessories and some white level 30 gear on the left side.
My last mentor roulette took me to Doma Castle, 7 minutes in and after looking at the tanks gear I got a good sense of why the last healer might dropped out: 3 or 4 pieces of accessories were ilvl240 strength pieces. That paladin was still surprisingly easy to heal, but they also didnt go for big pulls, so maybe they were aware that their gear wasnt really up to date? I didnt quite understand why it wasnt though - it seemed it was their first go through that dungeon, so first go through for the MSQ... surely there must have been quests to offer better stuff?
In any case those mentor roulettes sometimes serve as a reminder of why I usually tank in dungeons - or make sure someone I know tanks...

(Flash)" type of thing and hope for the best.
