Square Enix wouldn't make the mistake again of creating a race with only one gender. There will be male Viera.

Apparently there's an article somewhere about the French version of this game accidentally leaking info about another race for this game, possibly leaning towards a gender lock. If true, it's very unfortunate. It was posted by an online site a day ago about a Race Glitch FFXIV on reddit as well.

The French "leak" should in theory be safe to talk about since it's an in-game bug; it requires no data mining or illicitly obtained information. I'll be vague anyway, just in case.

It looks to be an incorrect text command which inadvertently triggers a listing of race options rather than a specification based on the player's race. This list of races includes two that are not currently present in the game, one being Viera. When the options are presented, both nonexistent races have both gender options available, even when an adjectival modifier is used. Depending on what the observer wants to believe, this is seen either as evidence that two genders are coming for two races, or proof that [a] one race is coming for each gender and [b] Square Enix exhaustively codes possibilities.

Maybe Yoshi-P really does hate bunny boiz so much that he'd make an entire separate race just to undermine the desire for it. (It'd surprise me, but still. Maybe!)

Maybe they've been coding them as lions all this time, just so even the 3D modelers have been left in the dark until...

There was an old article back from 2013 where Yoshi-p mentioned possibly having playable viera, but said they might do a separate male only race because "having a male rabbit would be weird." It was over five years ago so I'd hope his opinion would have changed since then, especially since there ended up being quite a bit of concept art featuring them and the whole male bunny suit thing. Unfortunately though, it makes me question "They'd never do genderlocked races again!" when he was suggesting doing them again after having just undone them. Plus it reminded me of the whole blue mage thing where he basically outlined blue mage as a limited class years before it was implemented as one.

I definitely don't like the idea of genderlocked races, but I'm starting to feel more and more like it's going to be a reality again.

I'd be all for a big, beefy lion race. I've always wanted to play a character along the lines of Kimahri from FFX or Cray from Breath of Fire IV.

I read the first part of your paragraph and immediately started thinking, "It's Blue Mage all over again!" And then the second part of the first paragraph DID bring up Blue Mage. :P

Yeah, Yoshi P does seem to have some strong opinions that he clings to, come Hell or high water, regardless of how the fanbase feels about it. It definitely has me worried! Not that I'd be likely to change to a bunbro even if they were implemented. Or a lionbro, for that matter.

YES! Because there was nothing stopping them from making super masculine bun bros.

Of course, I have nothing against them making a gruff lion race (although Miqo'te are already feline and Sunseekers already have a very lion-like society with one breeding male and other men either competing for the position or breaking off into their own prides/tribes), it's the genderlock that's...controversial...

I'd prefer it not be genderlocked. It'd be a nice change to see diverse body styles regardless of gender, even though I know fewer people would play them since people have a habit of sticking to ideals. However, that wouldn't stop them from having more fun with variances with their NPCs.

In fact I don't mind if they were Asexual honestly, since that representation tends to be overlooked as well.

Is it safe to post the race's name as it's visible as part of the bug?

The fact that they're listed between Au ra and Viera is the interesting part, because it implies they were getting worked on before the coding to accommodate Viera started, and makes me wonder if they were content that ended up not being ready in time for Stormblood and have been getting worked on since 3.XX.

I think it's equally possible that, if genderlocked and equal, the male race would get listed first - since they're also "first" (default) on the character creator screen.
