Accounts are region specific. If you have an european SE account, an US key won't work. The fact that the servers are worldwide doesn't change that.
if you made an US account while living in europe, it'd probably work with an US key, but then you'd be forced to buy every single future expansion in the US, which would be no small bother.
I got my copy for £10 on Amazon.uk two or three weeks ago. Check the resellers, some of them no longer want to reserve the shelf space for it, and are happy to throw it out.

if you are from the US and cant find a cheap key there you can make a european account and add a european key..
you'll still be able to play with your friends from the US, and since the payment methods are global it wouldnt mather at all..
An account is just something you create on the website, it binds you to the specific region you select, but you can always just make a new account, if you havent bought the game yet it wouldnt mather ;-)
I have a US account already from my time playing FF11 so I guess I'll need a US game.
I also already have an authenticator since you basically got a second inventory for having one in FF11. I'm just a sucker for in-game items on CEs, but like I said, totally cool with a cheap CE. I've been looking around some more but I don't really know of any US game sites that sells stuff cheap, everything I see is still generally around 40 bucks.
Oh well, I'll keep looking, thanks for the help so far everyone.

request a buddy key from forums, its the cheapest you'll find. I'm sure you know where to get the game.
Go to your local gamestop. I recently visited them planning on just purchasing the standard edition, yet they "encouraged" me to get the CE. I asked them why and they said that they were overstocked on them since so many people canceled their pre-orders, and so I got a CE for about 45 bucks, which is about 20 bucks cheaper and around the same price as the standard.I'm interested in seeing how FF14 has changed some since beta, and (inb4 flames or something) the game isn't very popular and I imagine I should be able to find the game dirt cheap, however it's being sold for full price on ebay and for about 40$ on Amazon, anyone know of somewhere I can get the game relatively cheap?
Willing to pay a bit more for CE, maybe 20$ or 30$, but it's not a huge deal, I just like getting CEs, don't have much money though so a cheap SE is good.

Way overpriced since you can get it for the total amount of £0.00
