I'm impressed at how well the ponytail on Alma's hair is animated. Most of the ponytail styles tend to be very stiff and either not move much or move very rigidly, but it flows really well. Even if I'm not a fan of the bow, it's a very well made style.

I'm sorry but I don't see how gender locked hairstyles does anything for your cause, as the rate of feminine x masculine styles released is roughly equal. They being gender-locked would only mean less options to everyone.

Before Ramza's hairstyle was added in, the last masculine hairstyle to be added to the game was the new Warrior of Light hairstyle that was added with 4.0. There have been multiple feminine hairstyles that were added in that time that were just added as gender neutral. I don't trust Square to not just make female items and leave them gender neutral thinking that's good enough for both male and female characters at this point. Having the gender lock is forcing them to actually consider male toons.

List of """masculine""" hairstyles added after 4.0:
    - The WoL monk one (assuming it's the one you mention)
    - The samurai WoL one (the one in GCI)
    - Yotsuyu's brother hairstyle
    - The samurai ponytail that resembles Hien's
    - The pvp one with the little beads
    - The pvp one that is the "feathered"
    - Cloud Strife hairstyle (but it's under very limited circumstances - might be available in the future somehow)

I'm missing something? That's more than 1 style per major patch.

Edit: Since I'm already there, listing the same, but for "feminine" hairstyles:
    - Gyr Abanian Plait
    - Eureka Pyros hairstyle
    - The one with bangs and straight long hair, although who wears it is a MALE lalafell (Krile's colleague in Eureka), but it looks girlish

Indeed - and you have to keep in mind Square Enix's design tendencies as to what are "male" hairstyles to begin with! (Would anyone have considered Estinien's hairstyle to be intended for a male character if it just got added to the game as a unisex hairstyle, not connected to anyone specific? And things like the ponytail and 'Samsonian locks' (long straight hairstyle from PotD) are used for male characters more often than for female.

For reference, this is the list of unisex hairstyles available in the character creator (not counting extra purchased/acquired ones):

This is even worse if they want to have a more traditional feminine look to their character that uses a longer hairstyle that will inevitably clip with their glamour choices.

I have used so few choices out of all the available hairstyle options. A lot of that is due to personal tastes as I find many of the styles just don't look good on my Midlander. This is why I am in favor of more braided updos like the Gyr Abanian plait, and they should look into implementing more of them. Longer hairstyles don't necessarily have to drape down our backs to be feminine.
I agree on this - and we've picked the same hairstyle for our characters so you'll also know the pain of the ends clipping through scarves and collars!

(Also I've said before, clipping has been prettymuch the death of the WHM Lv70 artifact gear, thanks to that fan collar that clips horrendously. The dress is going to appeal to people who want that traditional feminine look for their character, as you said - except it's doomed to look awful with the hairstyles that will appeal to those same people.)

In my case I also picked the Midlander face that is a bit rounder - the actual outline of the face is different to the default shape, and I feel like a lot of hairstyles don't sit quite right on it.

You have a point regarding some of these. I honestly had forgotten about Hien's hairstyle (probably because my personal opinions on the hairstyle are that it's just an ugly look) but it was added. As for some of the others mentioned, the fact is that despite them appearing on male characters in the game, they actually look very feminine. It's not a bad thing if you want to have a more feminine looking male character, do whatever makes you happy, I'm simply commenting on the lack of options for more, I guess, western style male haircuts. It seems more of the male hairstyles added in are contemporary Japanese male hairstyles that will look more feminine to my perspective.

This is exactly what I'm saying, thanks for posting the hairstyles. Of the 22 here, 13 look like they were designed with female characters in mind while the other 9 are either male or unisex, even if those hairstyles were all intended to be male or unisex.

Well, I don't know, but I count just 7 "purely feminine" hairstyles on that list. I guess it really boils down on what is considered feminine or masculine...

Though, honestly, the ideal case is they developing both spectrums of hairstyles and let them be unlocked, because in the end, this subjectiveness will weight heavily on opinions.

That braided ponytail in the middle, for example, for me it is clearly a male victorian-like hairstyle, a bit similar to the silhouette of Edgar in FFVI.

to be honest race and gender locking of items is literally a dev time saver cas then they dont have to model it for all races/genders even though it would probably only take them like 20-30 min tops to change a few values in the code for it to work its basically just not important so they dont wanna waist time on it witch i both disagree and agree with i agree its not as important as some other stuff but i feel it limits the player and in that regard i dont think anything should be roll, gender or race locked with exception to stuff like AF gear and starter sets (hempen sets shouldn't be race locked just throwing this out there)
