Admittedly, I'm still relatively new to this franchise, and I only really care about this because I latched on to Fran like a leech when I played FF12. No idea why either. That being said, I've read all about the fiasco with the Miqo'te and other gender-locked races, so that was the first thing that got me thinking that maybe they'd do males. Also the concept art.

Regarding the Dramaturge, he only says that because the male Viera living in the forest are hidden. He also said that in the past it was unheard of for Viera to leave their village. That leads me to believe that with this new timeline/universe/future/etc. more of them have taken to leaving their homes for whatever reason. (I'm still catching up with the story, but I remember reading something about the Garleans invading their land?) So I don't think it's too farfetched to hypothesize that some male Viera would also leave the forest. Also, like others have said, the Viera were also compared to Keepers. So until stated otherwise by the devs, I see no reason to believe that we won't get playable male Viera.

TL;DR: I didn't take what the guy said that way. Until there's actual confirmation to the contrary, I'll keep holding out hope for bunbun boys.

People keep mentioning a Lion race, but since we got most of the Ivalice Races so far (and still get) e.g. Bangaa, Seeq, Nu Mou, Viera. I actually expect the lion race to be the Rev race, which you meet shortly in FF12.
And thats just me, but I hope they will be just a unplayable race like the Lupin.

I really don't want this game's "last race" to be 2 separate genderlocked races... so I'm going to hold out hope that the males being incredibly rare is just going to be the in-game explanation as to why male NPCs won't be wandering around new areas en masse come 5.0.

Aside of the major issues/complaints, a "dual race" with males of race A and females of race B wedged into the programming template of a single race would probably also make a mess of the character creator "choose your race/clan" pages. They would have to have the lore information for both races in each text blurb (race overview / clan 1 / clan 2).

It's doable, but if this was the case, I'd expect them to boast about "TWO new races, please be excite"

They probably wouldn't put them in the same template. Miqote and Roes had their own when they were single gender races in 1.0.

One thing that I found weird was how they talked about Viera. I mean, if we do get to play as Viera, new players will get to play that race from beginning of the game (unless SE changes something about that). You, as a new player playing a Viera (maybe a male Viera even), advance through everything and then you get to the Ivalice raids, only to talk to a guy who says he never saw a male Viera and everyone talks about Viera as if you were not there. They'll probably change the text a little bit if you are a Viera, but I just thought it was something funny to think about.

They seem to have gotten better about adding variable dialogue where it's relevant to your character's race, but ARR had issues with it even for races that existed from the start of the game. One of my alts is a Duskwight and there are a few times where that should be relevant, but the game just carried on with the same generic script regardless. Starting in Gridania where there is a general prejudice against them; the archer questline where he's still just dismissed as a generic "outsider"; probably the lancer quests if I did them; Buscarron still explaining Duskwights like he's not talking to one.

Oh okay, I never noticed that. I played the first time as Hyur and those kinds of details went over my head at the time. Well then I guess there's some precedent to ignore the WoL's race in the story. Still, as you said, they could probably add some race-specific text. Where the Dramaturge says he never saw a male Viera it could say, for example, "you're actually the first male Viera I've ever seen".
