I was hoping that removing the gender lock on the bunny outfit would set the precedent for removing gender locks on clothing in general. Because surely SE wouldn't want to put up with several more years of requests for another set when they could just make it available for both genders to begin with?
Eh...Have a few years of requests and throw a bone making one set unisex...or make every set unisex.I was hoping that removing the gender lock on the bunny outfit would set the precedent for removing gender locks on clothing in general. Because surely SE wouldn't want to put up with several more years of requests for another set when they could just make it available for both genders to begin with?
Guess which one is way more time consuming and costs a lot more?!
Yeah. Not many people will quit this game over gender locks on some gear. And those are counterbalanced by those that would leave if men could walk around in skirts and such. And you know there would be people like that. So what incentive do they have to make it a precedent and give the same treatment to everything, including obscure and rarely used items that don't even garner interest in the first place?! That's just nonsensical.
It's a fact that they chose a very inefficient way to program gear. There is no proper 3D model. It's mostly a texture that supersedes whatever it is used on. Because of that they need to make a copy for every variety manually. So it's pretty obvious that they avoid doing anything that will make them waste resources on off-shot items.
It is a fact that majority of the players will wear the respective gender items even if the gender lock will be removed. And yes, that even includes most suits and similar technically "unisex" garbs that are however mostly worn by men. It's just inefficient.
Men can already walk around in skirts and dresses and such, we have a LOT of gear that is very feminine that males can wear already; that's part of the reason people get so up in arms when items come out genderlocked, because the ones that ARE locked are so completely arbitrary compared to things we can already equip with no trouble. It's abundantly clear at this point that genderlocking has nothing to do with potentially offending players, and everything to do with the devs cutting corners where they think they can get away with it.
Just think of all the feature requests over the years that have been answered with 'that would be too hard' or 'that would be a lot of work'. They're obviously understaffed, but that's no excuse to lock half the players out of a certain outfit just to save some dev time...if you only have time to make one outfit, make one outfit, but you'd better make it for everyone; if that means they have to cut down on the overall number of outfits, that's fine, alternate them so we get 'masculine' clothes on odd patches and 'feminine' clothes on even, just let everyone wear them.
There's just no point locking anything anymore when I can already make a male character look like this:

AFAIK it's not even that they have to model completely separately for each race and gender. At least for females isn't it all based on the Hyur skeleton for everyone but Lalafell?
cerise leclaire
(bad omnicrafter & terrible astrologian)
Im somewhat okay with it
But come on
>fancy ishard dress for females
>males get DoL set i340 top
Why are these counterparts makes no sense
They finally got the memo that people who play male characters were sick and tired of not getting special nice things like the girls did, which is good. They are trying to keep it even by releasing one at a time or one set first, one set later which is also good. Problem is they don't seem to have much planned for guys at all so the girls get a nice dress and we get ???. Hopefully this is just a one time thing since the Alpine Coat was given as a gender-neutral MSQ reward...? Still, getting re-colored DoH gear that is known to fit everyone seems like a bit of a cop out.
I agree that the new male top is a lame addition. They finally got the memo that people who play male characters were sick and tired of not getting special nice things like the girls did, which is good. We still don't have the female equivalent of the alpine coat (alpine dress?). We have the female version of the A-2 material supplier. We do not have the male version of the A-2 material supplier, IIRC?
That is an interesting image, but I reckon it's one of the few.
I'm pretty sure that you include all the "robes" in that 'as such', like the healers robes. Those are not female clothes though. Those ARE unisex. In the past, they were not a sign of being a woman or a man interested in womens clothing, but of a person of high standing and/or wealth. Not coincidentally I'm sure...in the times that correspond roughly to what Final Fantasy XIV seem to be based on.
Ultimately, as I said, the developers cave in here or there to please the crowd. That does two things. Calms down the arguments for a bit and minimizes the amount of controversial garbs. As a result, those are really rare because not only do they need to be found attractive by a given player over all the other options, but that player needs to play a male character too.
If there was a flood of such clothes, they would be worn a whole lot more because there would be a much higher likelihood of something attractive being found.
I never said that they don't do it to not offend players. I said quite clearly and in no ambiguous terms that it's to save money. And that among the rare people that could actually drop the sub over this matter, on top of those that would do it for lack of certain options, there are also those that'd quit for presence of them. So that counterbalances itself.
This thread again?
Literally every time a male exclusive item is added.... every. single. time.
Women's options already far surpass men's options in both quantity and quality. To complain that a newly added item is gender locked is, frankly, insulting.
