Thats where your sub money went, an ingame version of mahjong which no one wanted, no one understands and no one plays, enjoy.

As I posted earlier, my mostly-Asian FC is quite excited about this. Some are playing it as a first choice over MSQ or raids. They're having discussions about when we can get a version that can be placed in houses, and whether they can turn the FC into a gambling den. Even though I don't have any familiarity with the game beyond the solo version that came with Windows, it's clear that it's a big thing for them, that they will talk and joke about and play together.
Maybe they'll put in poker or chess or something later to cater to the Western market more. But don't assume that this is something that nobody wants just because you don't want it.
(A quick Wikipedia search tells me it is/was "the most popular table game in Japan as of 2010" and there is an entire culture around it, particularly in China and Hong Kong. It does sound like it's the cultural equivalent of playing cards.)
Plenty of people wanted it, actually. It just so happens to mostly be Eastern players. It isn't at all unfair for the developers to add it, though - since this is a Japanese game at the end of the day.

Plus I thought I heard some devs made it for fun in their spare time and then it was decided to add it to the release version of the game.
Thanks for helping make the FFXIV community a fun and welcoming place. If you're not sure you have (and you very likely have), make it a point to be patient or helpful the next time you log in so that you can know you've made a difference.
If you're on the Aether data center, congratulations! I might be your nextexciting adventurehealer in the Duty Finder. Please look forward to it.
I thought they said they'd outsourced it to a company that already made a popular Mahjong game.
It does sound like they should have put a bit more effort into trying to make this a more accessible, it might be a game made in Japan but most of it's player base is outside Japan.

Either way doesn't sound like they were using lots of staff that would otherwise be making new dungeons, etc.I thought they said they'd outsourced it to a company that already made a popular Mahjong game.

It's kind of nice they add difference things to the saucer so that people of varied interest can find something to do.
Personally I would like a dummy mode, extreme novice setting, etc., that has no bearing on rankings but lets you just learn the game with lots of hand-holding. From what I'm reading don't think that's in the game, and I can see why. Many players in Asia and a good number elsewhere already know the game and this is largely directed towards them.

Yeah the idea of adding it seems fine, especially if they could outsource it. Just seems a shame they didn't try to make it more accessible.Either way doesn't sound like they were using lots of staff that would otherwise be making new dungeons, etc.

I didn't ask for it but I can't say I am annoyed it's in the game. What does annoy me is OP's issue. There does need to be a middle ground for how many can participate in a game.
