Oh hey, this thread's still around.
Obviously not, if they were at relatively full health when they died. What does this have to do with anything I've said? Are you one of those people who blames healers when a tank gets one-shot by a tank buster?
I know the attack you're talking about, and no, it wasn't so overpowered that it killed me in i130 gear. You wouldn't be saying this if you ever had an undergeared healer in the vault who kept getting one shot to the first boss' targeted buster (and no I'm not joking or exaggerating, it one hit KO the healer because due to their gear they did not have enough HP to survive it) and then having no healer and no one to raise so you wipe 4 times on the first boss until you get lucky RNG that the healer finally doesn't get targeted by it.
THEN come back and tell me it is okay for people to be undergeared.
Except it pretty much is. Some people are convinced that 4 man dungeons are so difficult that doing it with anything less than the very best (because i270 is not much less than the very best) makes you a leech to your party. Why is this true in Abania at i270 but not true in EX dungeons at i380?You promoting people to enter stuff undergeared needs to stop. You spreading misinformation needs to stop. What I mean by misinformation is implying people that gear 380 for ex is like gearing for Castrum Abania as a 270. It is not the same at all.
That's no excuse for not finding someone else who can do it for you. The game has no shortage of players who can meld. How about...you literally can't? At level 20 you haven't been able to learn advanced melding and no piece of lv20 gear has five materia slots so...you literally can't.
Where abouts? All I recall what has been said is it just makes things obnoxious for everyone involved if the tank is in i270 gear, as they now have to adapt to one person who may or may not know how to play the Job at your skill level (you've claimed it can be done, but that's just you and whoever else says they've done it. I gave my experience and you said that's because the tank was bad. No duh they were bad, however they would have stood a better chance at surviving and preventing a wipe to trash mobs if they were appropriately geared).Except it pretty much is. EX Dungeons are tuned to the minimal required ilevel (currently i340), whereas levelling dungeons appear to be tuned to the required level and the gear it expects you to be wearing.
Also i370 was the highest ilevel before 4.4 dropped, so...

I think this is the key. The dungeons are designed with the gear available at the time of release in mind.
Castrum Abania was designed with all of Stormblood's leveling process in mind. By the time you got there you could -and ideally should - have upgraded from the i270 gear to something more powerful. The story had given you lots of opportunities to obtain better gear, or outright handed it to you.
When the Burn released, the average player had to go into it in with, at best, their i360-370 gear - and be able to beat it with that level gear. And those first few days fighting the Mist Dragon were a lot tougher than now as we've geared up, but it was doable, and all of us were in the same "undergeared" boat together.
I think the "appropriate gear level" is meant to be indicated by what is dropped in the dungeon. Castum Abania drops i288 gear - close to the best possible gear (i290 job gear) that would have been available to player at that point when the game was new. The dungeon is also the most difficult content available to a player at that point.
The Burn drops i355 gear, again slightly below the best possible gear (i360) available at the time to non-Savage players. While higher gear was made available at the same time the dungeon was released, there was higher-difficulty content added as well, and the gear was either expensive or intended to be earned over time.
It is amazing to see people asking to "prepare" for a lvl 69 duty you will do just one or two times before reach 70 and forget its existence then.
And I consider this "preparation" the real waste of time and (maybe?) loss of fun. If I want to "prepare" for something, I'll do that for lvl 70 content I want challenge. Maybe savages and latest ex primals. But not a lvl 69 leveling duty.
Really, some people treat everything as savage content... that's fine, if you like do that, but don't force everyone to your standards. Shire gear up to 70 is perfectly fine for any casual player.
Shire gear is not 'fine'. This isn't a raider standard - this literally is not 'fine' to just do after going through Bardam. Sure it's doable up to 70, but it is never 'fine' to go that far through the content in shire gear. This isn't a Savage standard - it's common sense. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If it was fine the MSQ wouldn't be literally giving you better gear just for doing it. Why don't they keep everyone using baseline gear then?It is amazing to see people asking to "prepare" for a lvl 69 duty you will do just one or two times before reach 70 and forget its existence then.

Again, don't force your standards to everyone. Casual leveling doesn't play your minmax game.Shire gear is not 'fine'. It's amazing how far some people go to defend their right to be undergeared.
