Will the Garleans be ostracized once the war with Garlemald ends in 5.0?

That got me thinking since the only exceptions of Garleans being welcomed in Eorzea and Hingashi/Othard were Cid and to an extent Nero.

If Garlemald suffered from a massive amount of destruction as a result to the Ascians' machination, I can imagine a lot of Garlean citizens leaving the empire in droves to other nations and I'm sure none of them will welcome the Garleans with open arms even if aid refugees weren't responsible for the actions the royal family committed

If that happens, assuming we can visit Garlemald at some point in 5.0, I kinda want a patch of questline of us working with all nations to eliviate the tension between Garlemald and the other nations which may lead into a peace treaty where all the nations work together to eliminate the Ascian threat

That is of course assuming that our transformation to the Warrior of Darkness would have us involved in working for the empire(or whats left of it) during MSQs

Also unrelated side note:I was a bit dumb with my decision to leave the forums a few weeks ago so.....I'm coming back xD.Well at least to the lore section anyway

I think it depends what positions people held in Garlemald as well as what they're own reaction to being in Eorzea are.

As a whole, Eorzea really doesn't have problems with Cid or Nero or even the XIVth Legion (once they stop trying to conquer Eorzea) being in Eorzea. But all of those factions aren't really bitter about being in Eorzea either. Like... some of the civilians on the Prima Vista complain more about not being in Garlemald then Nero, an officer in the Garlean Military does. Which is practically never.

The biggest problem I see is how pervasive Garlean Propaganda is about Eorzea. You see it crop up a lot in Ala Ghiri for example. The Garleans probably are going to (wrongly) be assuming the worst about the Eorzeans because that's what they've been told for the past 80 years. They don't know anything different. And finding out that what your society has told you about something is wrong isn't going to go over well with all the Garleans. Neither is watching a bunch of Eorzeans (correctly) tell them that most of what they've been told about Eorzeans is wrong.

I feel like most of 5.x is going revolve around maintaining a shaky peace between Garlemald and the other nations.

General Discussion and Lore are very different beasts.

Then again you did just make a thread that falls under the general umbrella of Garlean Morality, Ethics, and Treatment so I'd still bring a towel.

True that Garlean perception of Eorzeans is already marred by 80 years of lies. But at the same time, especially judging by how Fordola's dad was treated, that a lot of people would reject Garleans the moment they see them. Especially the region of Gyr Abania where Ala Mhigans's reaction can be an extreme one

The reason the XIVth legion wasn't that hated is because Gaius, out of all the Garlean legatuses, seemed like the most "pacifist" one as he stopped marching on Eorzea until he found the Ultima weapon which he could use to destroy the beast tribes and subjigate Eorzea's nations.

(Also the only Garlean with the common sense to stop provoking the beast tribes which would result in more primal summoning....at least until he could find a solution such as the ultima weapon)

Heck it was referenced by some Ala Mhigans that Gaius was a bit of a kind viceroy before Zenos replaced him.

Speaking of Gaius and Ala Mhigo, correct me if I'm wrong on this, but didn't he adopt Fordola and found her a place within the empire?

They hinted at that but never built up on it not even with a flashback

Ala Mhigo has been subjugated by the Garleans for 20 years. Of course they hate them. The rest of Eorzea though? Not so much. By now they've won against Garlemald enough that they probably wouldn't feel that threatened by them so long as the Garleans wouldn't actually tried anything.

Fordola's dad wasn't Garlean. Both of Fordola's parents were Ala Mhigans who supported Giaus' takeover of Ala Mhigo. But given how bad of a ling Thodoric was, saying Gaius was better then him isn't saying much. It's pretty obvious that the Garleans occupying Ala Mhgo didn't think much of the Ala Mhigans even if they were loyal to the Garleans. One of the Garlean officers is just there watching while the Ala Mhigans beat Fordola's dad up and basicly says it's not worth stopping a bunch of savages fighting each other. So yeah... That said, Giaus was at least interested in ruling well according to his own standards while Zenos didn't care what happened to Ala Mhigo at all. So for the past 35 years or so, Ala Mhigo has had a slew of bad rulers they didn't like, some worse then others.

Giaus would have at least known about Fordola, but it wasn't like she was anyone special to him (probably). That said, the Skulls were created by Giaus and it's very unlikely another Legatus would have done something similar to them. The unusual part about the Skulls is that they stayed in Ala Mhigo rather then were shipped elsewhere in the Garlean Empire. Usually, the Garleans move their conscripts out of their native territories to serve in foreign ones. Giaius had the idea that the Ala Mhigans wouldn't rebel as often if the people they would have been rebelling against where other Ala Mhigans loyal to Garlemald. However, the Ala Mhigans care more about people's motives then their race (Baut's questline in Ala Ghiri is a good example of the positive version of this), and considered the Skulls to be traitors of Ala Mhigo and no better (almost worse in fact) then the Garleans. For whatever reason, the Skulls didn't leave Ala Mhigo with the XIVth Legion, so when Zenos took over Ala Mhigo after Giaus left to conquer Eorzea, he took over the Skulls as well. Which was probably the worst thing that could have happened to the Skulls.

The situation will likely play out in a similar manner to the situation with Ishgard and Ala Mhigo. Reform will occur and attitudes will be set to be adjusted across the board. Garlemald will learn that there's more to Eorzeans than they believed but so, too, will the Eorzeans be forced to confront the fact that there's more to Garlemald than they initially assumed.

Ishgard's war lasted for a thousand years. Garlemald's conflicts lasted for but a fraction of that time. We've seen examples of numerous conflicts having taken place across Hydaelyn's history and yet despite that the message has been pretty clear that the best approach is to come together and put aside any differences for the sake of the greater good.

Once the lies of the Ascians are exposed, a number of Garleans are likely to change their tune - they're a pragmatic people with a focus on efficiency. Varis does not want senseless bloodshed. Gaius did not desire that either. Regula was the same and forged an alliance with the Warrior of Light; sacrificing himself in the process of defending a former foe. The worst of Garlemald we have seen thus far can be directly attributed to Ascian meddling, including those compromised by the consequences of said meddling.

One also needs to consider Doma and Lord Hien's willingness to pursue peace. I'd also point to the heavy 'Ivalice' vibes where Garlemald is concerned. It's more likely than not that we'll get a 'Larsa' type figure and that Garlemald's story will move in a similar direction to that of Archades in FFXII.

A focus on efficiently being colonialist and imperialist.

The issue is that as shown by the regular Garleans, there is this assumption in-universe that the conquests of Garlemald are "rightful", irrelevant of whether they are Ascian-inspired. Whether this will be completely swept aside by the writing team is uncertain, since we can't really simulate socio-historical movements to a finicky degree in a game (nor should we). But it exists, so we can't really say that as the evidence stands now Garleans as a whole will accept that their imperial ambitions were wrong.

The Populares faction do oppose the royal family's way of running things over there in Garlemald so at least I'd assume they managed to convince a number of people to their cause

Especially with damning evidences about how the conquest made the primal problem worse( thanks to ascian manipulation) rather than getting rid of it
