If there is a mass exodus, it just shows how incredibly shortsighted and useless this whole scenario was in the first place. Trying to force people onto their new DC will only cause them to transfer right back again or quit the game entirely.
This whole thing would probably be much more welcome if the new centers actually had a purpose from our perspective. There are plenty of regions that could easily justify their own data center I think, NA specifically could probably do with an East and West Coast option. Opening up new data centers for regions that currently have to deal with bad ping would be a welcome addition that would hopefully reduce some strain on the existing centers. It's a solid reason to move at least, not this purely arbitrary one we currently have...
Honestly I think this would be mildly, better received if they split the servers between West, Central, and East. At least then people could pick and choose which data center would give them better ping and it might feel like somewhat less of a gut punch. This whole thing would probably be much more welcome if the new centers actually had a purpose from our perspective. No mmo developer is going to make your in game relationships priority when making these decision. The health of the servers takes priority over your ingame friendships, don't like it quit and never touch MMO again. Clinging to ingame friendships so tightly is unhealthy..so seek therapy yourself before suggesting others do.To every person who has tried to minimize the impact this is having on groups of friends being torn apart - please, I'm trying really hard to not get banned from the forums, don't force my hand.
Right now I am on Zalera with my FC and the majority of my static who I love. Our DRG is on Cactuar and we were so happy to find him at the end of Sigmascape and he fits in perfectly. My best friend in-game is from Adamantoise, sometimes he's literally been the reason I've kept playing so that we have a thing to do together and hang out in discord during. I've got people I care for on servers spread across all 3 data centers now and it was bad enough being unable to play with people from Primal but now it's gotten even worse.
If you think this isn't an absolutely awful decision by SE that showed basically no care for the playerbase or the friendships that have formed via this game I don't know what to tell you. If you think ' Oh well, make new friend's I am literally disgusted by you. Seek therapy, you need help.
Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!
It’s incredibly insensitive to tell people to not bother to value the friendships they make through an online game. Just because they’re ingame or virtual doesn’t make them any less a friendship than those with people nearer to you that you see every day. Especially in this day and age.No mmo developer is going to make your in game relationships priority when making these decision. I met my boyfriend on online games. We have now been together for 7 years and plan to marry and start a family.
Like...are you even thinking about what you are saying?
You can find meaningful relationships online and in online games....if someone can meet their significant other online then friendships are even easier, hello?
Are you a licensed psychiatrist? What is so unhealthy about having friends, spending time having fun with them, and cherishing your interactions with them?
Having friends and wanting to continue playing with them is "unhealthy"....sigh...just when you think you've seen everything on these forums. This is ridiculous.

There's already talk about some people leaving Balmung to try and establish a strong role-play community on one of the Aether servers, so the people convinced that they'll finally be free of role-players will be bitterly disappointed.
No, other MMO developers fix the underlying problem instead of screwing over the playerbase with a bandaid fix.No mmo developer is going to make your in game relationships priority when making these decision. I am torn ... I am on Mateus currently and have been before it became a RP server. I don't like the idea of having more RP'ers to annoy me from Balmung with the world visiting coming. I do however enjoy my FC and doubt they would move. I am also getting better at certain and feeling confident enough to start trying to raid savage content so it would be nice to be with experienced raiders that could help guide my newbie self to become a decent raider in FFXIV. This doesn't look to be promising on the crystal DC. So I am torn as to what I will do ....
