    Materia Melding

Hey, thanks in advance for any and all help!!

I have never melded materia before before I dislike crafting..now that we can meld using NPC’s I’ve finally melded some. However, now I realize there is a way to meld even more, and add materia even when there aren’t any slots??

Can some one explain how I can add more materia to my gear?

Overmelding has to be done by a player the npc won't do it, also it has a high chance of failure going as low as a 5% chance of success at the 5th slot

The NPCs cannot do overmelding for you, that is something only players can do. As for how it is done, it is done just the same way as normal melding of materia - but with a large chance of failure resulting in the materia used being lost.
You can't meld materia to gear that do not have any materia slots at all, but up to five pieces of materia to gear that does have at least one slot.

So to “overmeld” I MUST be a crafter? Crud!

You can ask someone to do it for you but that failure rate still exists

What if the gear is untraceable/bound?

I have a question - I played wayyy back when ARR launched (anyone remember how AWFUL those first two weeks were? You would have to wait in a queue for HOURS and then once in, some people would stay in-game all day just so they didn't have to wait to get in later on? But I digress).
As I said I played from launch, for about six months or so. I just started over from scratch about six months ago, and am loving it.
But my memory may be failing. Correct me if I'm wrong but originally didn't you HAVE to go to crafters to meld something (there were no melding NPC's at the time)? I seem to remember a lot more shouts of, "LOOKING FOR A GSM FOR A FEW MELDS!!", etc.

So these melding NPC's were added in at some point - was there any reason given at the time? Maybe just that having to always look for a crafter to meld was a PITA, so they factored that out?

You can Request Meld from a crafter. However, you need to send a request for every attempt, so this can take a while for advanced overmelding.

It's important to note that most gear cannot be overmelded at all, except gear created by crafting such as the Rakshasa set. Genesis, raid and dungeon gear for example cannot be overmelded and using the NPC will give you max melds.

From what I remember, patch 3.2 introduced materia slots to non-crafted endgame gear. This change caused an increasing demand for a more readily way of melding materia onto gear. Their answer to this demand was the addition of materia melding NPCs in patch 3.3.

OP, keep in mind that you can't overmeld every piece of gear (like Liam already mentioned). You can easily see which piece can, and can't be overmelded, by checking the gear tooltip. If it states "Advanced Melding Forbidden", then you won't be able to overmeld it.

Yeah, like Liam said you can still get it done. The interaction menu(right click if K+M) for someone with crafters leveled includes the request meld option on the list. You select the piece of your gear(likely bound to you) and the materia from your collection, they hit a button and the meld is attempted with the normal success/failure rate. If the piece isnt bound to you its quicker to hand over the items(if you trust them), as a crafter melding something normally has a "try again?" type button that speeds up retries. Not required though as you can just keep hitting the request button and the crafter can keep trying til the meld is completed or you run out of materia.

And Nezerius is also right, any gear that says "Advanced Melding Forbidden" cant accept materia beyond the visible slots. Otherwise the limit is 5 materia per item(though more materia still wont allow you to go beyond the stat limits on a piece of gear).

Being able to meld your own gear as a convenience is one of the perks of being a crafter(like self repair). But you can live without it easily enough if crafting doesnt interest you.
