I went back and re-edited that list of names I posted yesterday, to delete out all the extra notes in the basic name lists and make them more readable. You can cross-check against the third list of characters by tribe if you want to know the other information.

I have the voices muted most of the time, but all the bits I've watched with voices turned on seem to pronounce it consistently as what sounds like "Esh-toh-lah" to me. Is that pronounciation consistent or do some voice actors say it differently?

I could sort of see a "short Yah" sound (as instructed in the naming conventions page) being compressed into "Yh" and then attached to the "sh" part of the syllable it could come out something like "Esh"...

How do the writers pronounce it in interviews? And how is it spelt in Japanese?

It isn't consistent among voice actors. I've heard a few say 'yah', though a lot of them turn it into a vowel like 'Ysayle' (the 'ish' pronunciation).

From what Fern/Koji has said, they coach the voice actors on pronunciation as best they can but not everyone gets it right. /shrug
