Strange ability lag?

I'm a new player, so sorry if this is an issue that's well known to the player base (though I couldn't find anything mentioning it).

Generally the game runs quite smoothly for me, but sometimes my ping spikes really hard (6000+ for both sending and receiving) yet even with such high numbers the only way it manifests is through abilities. When this happens I can find dodging abilities to be impossible, as I'll still get hit when I've been outside of the indicator for a good couple seconds before it goes off. It also causes issues with casting, where I can stop moving and start a cast, only for the cast to be canceled a second or two later because the game seems to think I'm still moving.

Is this something other payers normally experience?

Are there any known fixes for this issue?

The aoe dodging is always going to be dodgy (excuse the pun) because of the server tick lag - you basically learn that you have to be out of most indicators a good few ticks before they disappear or you'll still count as being in them and get hit (larboard/starboard is a good example in O11n - if you're still on the side when the indicator shows, you will get hit, there's no buts about it.) Combine that with the fact that XIV has been under massive DDOS/server lag the past week or two, and that's very likely the cause of the issues you're dealing with right now, for the casting as well.

This is exactly what I've had to deal with lately and is certainly the root of the problem for me. Even when they say the game has "recovered" at night the problem still persists, though definitely slightly less than it does during the day. However, once the attacks cease entirely as they did last week I was able to play with 0 lag and 0 ability delay. So yeah, I think it's safe to say that this is the main problem.
