I leveled exclusively via SCH. It's hard going compared to DPS and Tank classes but with Eos there to heal you and a chocobo to help with the damage it's probably the easiest of the healers to level through the MSQ.

Also don't forget the dps boost that Cleric stance gives. Sure it's a small burst but it's nice. Whm is fairly easy to level due to the raw amount of healing it can pop out. Just hurts when your assize hits more than you want it to.
Yes, they share the same base class - arcanist.
You're not leveling up your job, but rather your class, that turns into your job, once you equip the jobcrystal.
Arcanist is in the unique position to have two jobs it can turn to: Scholar and Summoner. Its your arcanist thats level 61 and depending on which jobcrystal you equip, it turns into a scholar (healer) or a summoner (dps).

I did the entire msq with sch, i didn't find any of it that difficult to kill things. it may be the items you have, if they are underpowered you may have trouble then. It helps using Eos and when you can your chocobo. if you find it difficult though get your smn gear and then you should be good, sounds like you havnt done smn so you can get some exp from their class quests too. If you are having a tough time, try leveling up with insta Que dungeons and stuff, get the gear and xp and then try the msq again.

+1 for mentioning a weapon..At lower levels there is shared Int/Mind gear but beyond level 50 I think it's all role specific so you would need Intelligence gear for SMN and Mind gear for your SCH.
If you're doing dungeons it will be faster to run as healer, but for solo quests and the like it's not a bad option to be able to switch to SMN. In general, though, yes healers are weaker in power due to having better survivability. In respect to healers, SCH is arguably the best damage dealing healer so at least you got that going. However, like others mentioned, if you're having some problems it's most likely gear related.
One thing I'm not sure on, and if you already have SMN unlocked it's a moot point.. But do you still need to level up other classes to unlock the old jobs? I believe you used to have Thaumaturge at 15 and Arcanist at 30 to unlock SMN. Don't know if they ever dropped those requirements or not, I've had all my stuff at 50 since ARR so it's been a while since I thought about that

They dropped it. The only thing they currently have as a requirement is (obviously) base class-> job (for those with base classes).+1 for mentioning a weapon..

I know some people prefer to take their healers through everything but as a healer main I've found that most of my MSQ stuff (minus dungeons and the requisite "keep yourself alive" duties) has gone a lot better with an on-level dps class to take instead. So definitely look into SMN - plus it has the benefit of sharing many of the core skills, so you should already be familiar with using your dots, etc.

At the start of Heavensward and the start of Stormblood, enemies become significantly beefier and hit much harder.
I remember when I started Heavensward, the Gnath used to chew me up quite a bit.

Also don't forget SCH uses DoTs as their primary form of damage. And with the hike in enemy levels that could make it seem like they are taking longer to die. All other jobs, including SMN and Bard, the other DoT jobs, have a variety of "burst" skills to make the target die faster. SCH really only has Broil and Energy Drain, and compared to the other healers, the potencies are really low.
