Make Garleans playable using the para-magic system from VIII to justify their magic use.
Honestly though, I'd rather see more original content and world... stuff... thangs...

Not that I particularly want garleans, I feel they'd just be big hyur with forehead dots, but one could simply say that the Echo allows the WoL to use magic. Problem solved.

I was just trying to think of a way to get more elements from VIII into the game; if there's one game in the franchise that tends to be underrepresented in a crossover (such as this) it tends to be VIII in my experience. Probably because that one was a romance at its core and had some atypical elements (level scaling, even more modern setting than VII).
Maybe we'll run into Esthar or something. /shrug

There are tonnes of elements in VIII that could be taken from, not just the Squall/Rinoa plot. Hell, you have 3 armies at least with their own enemies that could easily have been seen in the garlean empire already. Big garlean spider tank? Big blue tank with a laser beam? Imagine a garlean academy with allusions to Galbadia garden (Just don't call it Galbadia Garden, or even a garden at all).I was just trying to think of a way to get more elements from VIII into the game; if there's one game in the franchise that tends to be underrepresented in a crossover (such as this) it tends to be VIII in my experience. I hate when this game directly lifts things from other FF games though, I don't mind models coming over, like the guard scorpion as part of the garlean empire, or the snail thing from VI being a boss and now random enemy, but when literal NPCs and iconic characters and plots are brought over, I feel like it cheapens XIV as its own product. The allagans have felt gimmicky since they are derived from FF3, and every part of the origin is a retelling of that game. Dalmasca being a core part of Othard now, makes me lose any immersion for the area. Its nothing but fanservice and makes the game feel shallow. I think the only exception when it comes to location is costa del sol, because there are no FF7 references other than the name.
This. There is a big difference between a subtle nod, a boss that is a throwback, or a bit of dialogue reference, and literally inserting X iconic part of Y game into eorzean lore and canon.

Potentially the Magitek Academy in Garlemald will draw from the Gardens?
