After a quick search I found loads of people with the same issue and this article explaining why it happens PS4 copying update files - can you make it faster? Short answer to the question seems to be, 'No'. It's nothing to do with your internet speed just the way the PS4 downloads patches and applies them. Looks like a lot of extra hard disk space is going to be necessary too. Can't say I'm entirely happy with the changes.

The pre patch for Stormblood was significantly earlier than the pre release date. By several days iirc. We might be ok

though it is quite early to say this, but a comment from a GM or dev would be lovely on this, mostly during the fanfests as a little side-note

I prefer this update method by far, personally. Besides, larger patch installs are generally done way in advance.. Small patches like this.. No biggie, it took me around 10 minutes. As for expansions, those downloads aren't nearly as bad as you'd think since most assets will have already been added into the game through prior updates anyway.

What change occurred to PS4 download/copy file procedure? And does anyone know why? This would have been a done deal in 2 minutes tops the way things were running before, and as of now the time has well exceeded how long it took me to get up and running after 4.4 hit. Had I known it was going to be like this, I would have let things run before I went to work this morning.

I have to echo the others, should this still be in place when 4.5 comes, the process will take hours to complete at the minimum. An expansion? You can say goodbye to any playtime that day.

20 minutes? Sounds like you have slow internet. My PS4 updated this morning in 5 minutes.

It's go nothing to do with the download time, or how fast your internet is. it's the COPY-INSTALL time that takes 20 minutes.

Which really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. So a small patch takes a bit longer than they used to, the convenience of having to do literally nothing other than having the console on to update is way more important to me personally. I no longer have to wake up early on major patch mornings to watch the forums/reddit like a hawk to see if the patch is up for download, or sit and refresh the laggy as hell launcher. I can get on with my life and sit in front of my PS4 5 minutes before maintenance ends knowing it's already updated and I'm ready to go.

Talk about first world problems. There are way more glaring issues with the game than the occasional 20 minute update.

Yeah, if you are paying for Plus and can download in rest mode (and copy, too?) I can see this isn't a biggie. Not all of us pay for Plus (and please, anyone thinking of giving me a financial management lecture in response to that - just don't).

Unlike you, I had no problems with the old launcher, a small patch like this would have been done in less than a minute. This is not an improvement for me.
Looking at the PS4 forums, it seems to have been an issue since Sept 2017. Link to PS4 EU Forum Post on this issue Large games appear to be the worst affected. I couldn't find anything official on this from Sony, though.

With the new change, you can finally patch in sleep mode and you don't have to worry about logging in and leaving the launcher open. You can also play other games while it patches or watch Netflix/Hulu with no worries. The game size was also literally cut in half freeing up space for other apps.

At the cost of slightly slower installation speeds I say the positives massively outweigh the negatives.
