You seriously can switch on the pre-exploding color before it even explodes, because the "cast time" there is already over, while the color before is still exploding or some shenanigans. I seriously once thought I switched to early, but I was just standing casually in the explosion and nothing happened.
I don't know, but that huge gap of delay is just confusing. It also makes the third Simon Says a bit harder, if you can't start from color 4 and need to run from the 3rd one. I can understand it can't be 100% lagfree but not THAT big?
Same for DDR, the last Orb is so hard to get, because somehow the game didn't registered you were standing correctly.

I don't know, change a tiny bit, so the delay is not THAT big?

I find the phoenixes to be more punishing than any other part of the fight, personally. Sure, it's not too bad to clear once you know what's expected, but five enemies doing 29,000 unavoidable damage + one to four stacks of a debuff that lowers your maximum health? Even one bird surviving is a guaranteed wipe, let alone four.

To be honest, the only mechanic in this patch I felt has really deceptive timing are the orbs in Alphascape 2.0 savage, as their AoEs lock in much sooner then the animation would suggest (It's seemingly when they reach their brightest glow, which happens almost two seconds before they explode).

A lot of players don't realize that there are very few non-persistent AoEs in the game that are unsafe to move into once their animation has begun playing out. If you move onto a Suzaku panel the moment you see it blow up, you shouldn't get hit by an explosion on the one you were just on unless you have a really bad ping.

If your group is having trouble killing the birds in time, they likely won't even be able to beat Suzaku's enrage timer.

If you're talking about the birds on normal, then they should be even less of an issue when you can just stack up in the center and burn them down with AoEs.

It seems to be very inconsistent, I've been on my toes literally ready to move half a second before the explosion lands so I'm running in whilst it's exploding and that usually works for me, but it's very risky because moving just slightly too soon means I get hit by the one that's about to explode and moving slightly too late means I get hit by the one that's gonna explode where I'm standing. Last night more than half our raid were blasted into the air despite having moved. This brings back memories of when Titan extreme mode used to blow you to pieces even if you moved out of under the weight.

Are you standing on the third/fourth platform to explode? or the second? Standing on the third or fourth gives you enough time to dodge as every explosion after the first will be consistent. Only time it's not is if FFXIV is dealing with a DDoS.

    Yay for SE's networking...

The problem is inconsistency. This can work 90% of the time, but occasionally you'll get screwed because of the game's network issues.
Looking at your GIF, it's not a latency issue. Or at least it barely is. You cross the line into the safe quadrant about 1.0 second after the previous explosion animation. That's way too late. As others have said, the damage is set before the animation. So you need to move well before the explosion occurs.

My sense of rhythm has deteriorated a bit since my years as a music student, but it looks like the explosions happen at around 60BPM, or once a second. Since you moved into the safe zone about 0.6 after the last explosion animation, and the explosions happen once a second, you got clipped. In fact, it was even further than it looked, because the damage registers before the animation. So basically if we split this into 3 seconds, it's something like this:

    0.0 start
    0.5 previous explosion damage register
    1.0 previous explosion animation
    1.5 explosion damage register
1.6 You cross to safe zone
    2.0 explosion animation

Lag can affect this to some degree, I think. But not excessively so. I have 170 ping ans I find it fine. I use the line straddling method. It's just a matter of feeling the rhythm of the explosions and moving into the safe zone AS it explodes, not reacting to it afterwards. Because if you react, you'll probably be too slow.

Also never trust the bird on the outside. Now THAT thing is affected by lag.

You get a feel for it with practice, I find that if you walk onto it right as you feel like it would explode, you are in the clear, and your character looks badass in the flames without being hurt :P

God forbid we expect visual consistency with regards to attack animations and outgoing damage. That would be crazy. It's much better to just have to memorize in every fight exactly what time you have to move out of a non-exploding zone into an actual exploding zone to somehow avoid taking damage. That 100% makes sense and is exactly what I would expect out of a AAA MMORPG.
