For players that use controller or are on console (and don't use keyboard or mouse) targeting will still be an issue regardless.
I think it misses the point that players shouldn't have to rely on macros or additional peripherals (keyboard and mouse) to play the game effectively. If it were so simple you would have a higher percentage of players voluntarily healing pets/turrets belonging to others, but generally they get away with using aoe effects (like Medica) instead as they don't require specific targeting.
So again regardless for some players targeting IS an issue, just because you might not have any and you have a solution for yourself, doesn't mean it works for others.

It's not surprising that we don't see people healing pets and turrets that belong to others, because those pets aren't tanks and so obviously don't fall under the simple solution of targeting a target's target. The discussion Janhyua brought up is specifically about healing pets as tanks, which fall under the special case of being able to be healed easily by target of target targeting or mouseover.

I think healing the pet tank is the least of the issues of having a pet tank. It would be a nightmare to balance as you would essentially have a 9th member of the party. The pet will either just assist the master with tanking and thus both pet and master be somewhat underwhelming. Or if the pet actually tanks then the masters stats would be nerfed to the ground and become something like a controller ala command missions. Trying to fulfil the fantasy without making the class broken or OP would be really tough.
