But that then extends the view on the problem. It has long been said by a portion of the playerbase that the forced expiration of content is a bad thing, and it seems that it is coming into the spotlight again now due to an item that players thought would be protected from forced expiration has now expired. Its not just renaming the white ravens that needs to happen, the dev teams entire philosophy on forcibly expiring content needs to change. Just because the entire system is flawed doesn't mean that this one aspect with an easy fix should be ignored.
I agree with that "expiration" is bad, but what makes these 6 year old cosmetic earrings more important than everything else in ARR to eventually SB. We know that SE aren't going to stop 'expiring' old content and we know that if they did, a majority (not exclusive to the OF) of the playerbase will cry foul (why do old content level sync'd when you could do them unsync'd for easier clears?).But that then extends the view on the problem. As a Legacy player, I figure I might as well throw my two cents in here:
I'll admit that, until Naoki_Yoshida felt he needed to reply, I hadn't even heard that there was an "outcry", any "outrage" or any response to these earrings existing at all. Speaking for myself and only myself, I actually advocate sharing "exclusive" rewards over time with the player base. One of the first suggestions I sent after 2.0 went live, in fact, was for a path to be opened for other players to get the 1.0 Goobbue mount. I saw the point raised about Feast rewards, and I would even advocate that, after a period of timed exclusivity, they too be opened up for the player base to enjoy as a whole. Perhaps it's through an achievement, perhaps a quest, who knows? I understand some of the frustration that people feel regarding these earrings, a frustration that inspired the unearthing of a post from 2012, but I think it's far enough into the revitalized lifecycle of FFXIV that us 1.0 players can wholly embrace those that joined in 2.0, even 3.0, and share our toys and shinies.
I truly wish I could help my newer fellow adventurers obtain a 1.0 Goobbue, a Legacy Chocobo, and whatever else is no longer obtainable throughout our time in current Eorzea!
I don't even do new content synched, I am just waiting for 5.0 to do it unsynched. Why should I put any effort into this game, when everything is handed out later anyway?
I really love the Rathalos mount for example. But no way will I do that fight synched. But without the unsynch option I would put in the effort. I am actually good enough to clear and farm the fight, and when I finally have it, I would be very proud about my new, awesome mount!
But meh, that accomplishment would be taken away from me in 5.0 anyway, I would be no longer proud about it, even when it is still a good looking mount. It's just an easy to get mount then, no point in beeing proud about having it.

Because this one has a very tangible fix, simple as that. With all other content, people technically achieved the same goal to get the rewards easier, but with these the goal was completely different, so the timestamps for completing them are also differentI agree with that "expiration" is bad, but what makes these 6 year old cosmetic earrings more important than everything else in ARR to eventually SB. The bolded point is arguable. Doing Coil unsync'd, you could drag someone into a fight, tell them to do nothing and then beat the fight faster than The Rising event and say they can have everything that drops.
If Rivenroad [Hard] still existed, it would also be unsync'd and people would easily get those earrings.
Edit: responses like Empyreans is why some people have generalised the entire 1.0/Legacy playerbase as entitled toxic elitists. That's behaviour no one on the FFXIV team should ever cater to.

I'm talking about from a code level, not from a community and gameplay level. The game code recognises the achievement the same way whether it's synced or unsynced (a huge failing of the system IMO), whereas on a code level, the earrings can be recognised differentlyThe bolded point is arguable.
