Maybe it would have been less like that if we had an expansion between it where we would just be adventurers, maybe even without certain NPCs to catch a bit of a breath and maybe with the intention of learning more about the world and its past. This way it just dont feel like war after war. I mean 5.0 seems to hint at Garlemald and that will probably end in another war.
This post has spoilers for current msq, don't read if you don't want them.

Well as I said earlier in another post I feel like as the WoL we are obligated to be using our power for something. An expansion where we just get to explore and learn about the world is also an expansion where things like the oppression by Garlemald and the scheming of the Ascians is left to fester.

I think at the start of 5.0 we are left with two primary directions - continue our assault on the Garleans or contend with the new Ascian plot. It's hard to tell at this point since we still have at least 4.4 and 4.5 msq additions coming but we are likely either pursuing 'the Elezen' or attempting to rescue Alphinaud.

I think we may see more of Zenos in SB and then head into The Burn come 5.0 if only because it seems incredibly unlikely they're adding a-new area outside of an expansion. If the pursuit of Alphie is delayed then Zenos is the obvious next step.

I will say this has been some of my favorite parts of the story since HW. It feels like we're growing up as a character and getting ready to face some of the true antagonists instead of getting bogged down in things like Ishgardian politics and Alliance drama.

Overall as much as it might be fun to have time to roam I don't think in our current situation it's the responsible thing for us to do, though I'll grant that perhaps I would feel differently if I wasn't constantly (in terms of the msq) thinking about all of these looming threats.
