Ah, I missed this. Sorry about that. Don't get discouraged from being a mentor. It really isn't bad at all. Really, as long as your helpful be knowledgeable, you're already a mentor. Intent and correct information is what's important, not a crown. But I do understand that a crown could help, too.At some point, I do want to become a mentor....but, at the same time, the negative stigma behind the crown makes me also not ever want to have it on either. Simply, because it would be easier to just help people without it on then receive any unnecessary and misplaced flack because a choice few people ruined it for everyone else.
There are a lot of helpful mentors. It's just that from my perspective, being a sprout all over again, things I've seen are just pretty off putting to say the least.
You can unlock the mentor system and not bear the crown. I did that. I also help when I see people are not aware of how a fight works. I'm not the best since sometimes I don't care and just wanna be done with something. But if you want access to "its system" and are scared of the stigma, remove the crown from your status info and boom, all set!At some point, I do want to become a mentor....but, at the same time, the negative stigma behind the crown makes me also not ever want to have it on either. Simply, because it would be easier to just help people without it on then receive any unnecessary and misplaced flack because a choice few people ruined it for everyone else.
If you say so.
I’ve been in the Novice Network on two servers.
Typhon was very quiet -there were a couple of people who would say ‘hello’ when they logged in, and then the channel was silent for the rest of the night.
Aegis is busier, but all in Japanese so I have no idea what kind of discussion is going on.
I wonder if some kind of Q&A “message board” could be a better format? So players can ask questions and have them sit there until answered, instead of having to stick it in the chat log where it’s only seen by whoever is there at the time?
Behemoth reporting in.
Just here on the free login, but in the four days I was here, our NN was, as usual, working as intended. Some casual discussion, both sprouts and mentors. Sprouts looking for others to play with, sprouts asking questions, even mentors asking questions, and all of them getting answered positively.
Just to note, our NN has two main languages, English and Brazilian Portuguese. We have mentors of both languages so everyone ends up getting help.
We do have some bad apples who in the past have caused problems, but I didn't see any of that in these four days.
I did mention that -.-/As a mentor it's sad to read these things, however people do have to realize that most players that are trolls are just poor excuse of human being that really have no output in life do to their crummy life, have no social life, and feel some sense of power over harassing other people. Best thing to do is report them to GM so they can take action. Many thing it does no good, however the more people file the same complain about the same person, as in get whole novice network to agree and file a gm report right away about the same player, most GM's will take action that same day.
In the time I've spent gaming online, I've seen plenty of people act like arrogant morons whether they had some fancy helper cap or not. In FFXIV, I've seen arrogant good players and bad players, and I've seen neutral/considerate good and bad players, with and without the mentor crown. SE can abolish the mentor system, but depending on how frequently you pug, you're still going to run across snobby know-it-alls (or wanna-be know-it-alls).
So I don't see the point in abolishing it, it's like identifying any other group by the worst of its members. Just /ignore them and move on. If they're doing something reportable, report them, but removing the mentor system isn't going to remove bad players, it's just going to remove what good it's doing.

Limsa Lominsa keep your pirates, and your ships covered in musty mold.
My loyalty lies with Gridania, with the Moogles and the tree spirits of old." -The Forky Conjurer
I didn't realize it was still so bad.![]()
I've been a mentor forever but I left the NN immediately because of the trolling and bickering.
I still help people outside and in dungeons ect... I figured it would have leveled out by now, people would have gotten tired of harassing new people for pleasure. Guess not. :/
Not gonna lie, I only got the crown because it looked kingdomheartsy, and I have never stepped foot in the mentor linkshell thingy. I usually just offer advice when someone asks inside dungeons and such. Readings the OPs comments though, it's really disheartening that these mentors are looking down so much on the newbies and feeding them so much negativity. I mean, I am not sure why the mentors feels so elevated, it honestly doesn't take much to get the mentor crown.
I am tempted to join the linkshell now to see just how bad it is.
Edit: Probably not that bad, if going by what the other behemoth commentor said. :P

Is there any proof the NN is "working as intended" on Japanese servers?
