    A Thought For New PvP Content

    So as I'm writing this, I'm sitting on minute 75 of a queue for what I think is Rival Wings (friend in FC just went "hey, let's do some pvp" and queued up), and it had me thinking about general issues with PvP, both with how this game handles it as well as my overall view of PvP as someone who isn't as much of a fan of it in any game. The queue times especially that, as a carebear, feels like a really long line just to get shot in the foot.

    I had an idea that because I'm sitting in this queue exclusively for wolf marks, why not have a wide-scale, easy-access instance like Eureka just for PvP just for farming wolf marks? One big ol' PvP free-for-all zone where each kill gives you a handful of wolf marks, and for every kill you get, you get a stacking debuff increasing the amount of wolf marks someone gets when they incapacitate you (I was told this was a LoL thing as well as a Feast thing, but I have no idea since I don't play either of those). Just like Eureka, anyone could enter and leave whenever they want.

    Kinda curious if anyone else thinks this would make sense for an alternative type of PvP content.

    Just an area where you run around killing people? That doesn't really sound fun to me. And way too easy to abuse. Just stand around and die for a turn, then vice versa.

    The real problem is SE is terrible at keeping content relevant. 1 mount reward per mode isn't enough. The old frontlines had this exact same problem, where people were only doing the newest mode. They kinda solved that by making it rotate daily.

    Rival Wings only has one mode right now, but I'm pretty sure they'll make a daily roulette for it once they add another, then it should pick back up. Until then I'd stick to frontlines and the feast....

    Sorry I meant to say. Make getting the achievements/mounts participation based not win based. But still keep he amount of seals rewarded win based. The problem I find is that if you don’t not get your mounts or whatever in the 1st or 2nd week. Your not going to get them. I will probably never get that Mecha gorilla.

    One thing I've been thinking about in regards to pvp is making it another alternative to get gear. Maybe not on par with tome gear and definitely not in the same category as Savage but have it give some decent stats as an alternative to running dungeons for gear.

    No easier to abuse than having a pre-made losing team just for the participation rewards. It's also understandable that free-for-all PvP isn't something for everyone despite it being as close to open-world PvP as we'd ever get.

    I guess much like how you could tag a mob for experience points, you could tag an enemy player to get wolf marks from the kill. There could also be something like getting a single wolf mark upon death for the "git gud" participation reward. Also have to bear in mind that this wouldn't be like any frontline, and that much like Eureka, it'd just be a "go in as you please" sort of thing.

    PVP in this game is a lost cause. Adding features to it will not bring a bigger population. PVP feels like fighting a 3 things at once. Players, the system and the game itself. It's like they went down a checklist of features and realised it was missing, so they stapled something together to get that checkmark. PVP is it's own biggest problem and no feature should come to it before it is overhauled the right way.

    As much as I hate to be shooting down somebody's dream, I hate open world pvp much more. In practice, it just turns out much much worse than what many are tempted to imagine it could be. Open world pvp is pretty dead in the industry as a whole and for good reason. Open world PVP was the original MMO PVP. It was so bad that everything that is good about PVP in MMOs was invented as a response to how bad open world PVP was. Balanced teams. Instanced zones (no more slide show). Queing for matches from anywhere in the game world. Matches with objectives other than just getting more kills.

    Really, FFXIV already has PVP that is everything you'd want from actual open world PVP. Que for the Frontlines random daily during the US evening and you will probably get a few 72 player matches, three teams of 24. That scale a match is everything open world PVP at its best is. Positioning goes from hugely important to essential. If a small group gets out of place they get overrun by one or two teams.

    Actual open world PVP has a bunch of crap you don't want. First, it's mostly waiting around; you spend an entire evening waiting around for a 2-3 big fights. When fighting happens, it's usually not balanced, so one side will quickly destroy and disperse the other. When it is balanced, one team will get on their favorite communication method(s) of choice and recruit a bunch of other players to group up and then show up to destroy the other team, which ends the fight as people disperse for the evening or more rarely sometimes try to recruit more people themselves to return the favor. So to underline a key point, who wins in open world PVP? 9 times out of 10, the bigger team wins. The 1 time out of 10 that the bigger team doesn't win, the smaller team is only just like 1-3 players short and probably has more healers. That just gets boring really fast.

    Unless they plan to add a more traditional PvP mode like Capture the Flag and revert a good number of the Stormblood changes, I don't want any more focus on PvP. They have tried for over three years now and it's been one failure after the next. The only time PvP ever looked to have any real promise is the initial Feast release and the Garo event yet they managed to fumble both. The chat ban is moronic at best, and they haven't been nearly consistent enough with rewards like the Garo stuff.

    My only hope for PvP at this point is they don't bring the skill consolidation nonsense over to PvE come 5.0. Leave it to die alongside Stormblood PvP.
