GCs as a whole are pretty outdated even on a story-front. From being a greenhorn adventurer who just joined the Scions and could use the backup, we're a one WoL army who can make our own armies if we so chose, who has all the GCs indebted to us, and we only keep making allies. Hell, we arguably conquered the Steppe and they all have to do what we say, and they even dragged themselves over to the Eorzea for us.
About the one thing that MAYBE I can think of that would tie you to a GC is the squad, but don't they go with you? So even that's irrelevant.
