Personally I think people expect far too much from "mentors" and by no means do I buy that they should be held to some paragon standard, Mentor system was simply SE poor attempt to provide an incentive to prompt generally good favorable behavior. In SE fashion they try to bait players with carrots.
I loved being a Mentor at first, gave genuine advice (used to before Mentor was a thing), but got burnt out. People just don't care, period. Someone out of many might actually listen to you, but the rest? If you're nice, they ignore you, if you're not too nice, they throw insults at you. Either way, it's a lost situation.

You fail to see the fact that I don't care lol. Also, did you seriously play the "child" card?

I don't want to make it any better. I've tried, for years, since 2.0. Like I said, people don't just care, and those who do won't start these threads. I don't care about the community, said so a few times here already, so I just say whatever crosses my mind. Nothing's gonna change, so you guys might as well ignore me? It was my point of view, nothing's gonna change that on the forums, only if I ever saw a real change in-game.

My actions in-game is what defines me, when I try to give friendly advice, when I genuinely try and help people by picking up their slack (knowing that they're trying hard), not by posting in here. So my conscience is clear.

Sorry you got burnt out, if you are going to give advice to a bunch of strangers you are bound to run into a few that will not take kindly to it. Also a part of it does sound like you took the role a tad too seriously, I mean it is awesome you enjoyed helping others in-game sad truth like anything mentor or not you will run into assholes that simply do not care. Just do you man.

This game got the whole idea of mentorship wrong. A mentor in this game is someone who grinds out a set of tasks. This is completely rediculous. A mentor is someone who can teach, who has patience, and well knowledged. The only way players can be given a title ‘mentor’ would be from other players who share and meet the same criteria I listed. Just remove the word ‘mentor’ in this game as clearly that isn’t what the players with the title are doin (myself included)

Nah, it happens often enough in the Novice Network. Or at least it happens there more frequently than anywhere else. The problem starts with the 2k mount.
    1. Tear the roulette apart from the mentor title
    2. change the icon so less people want to wear it
    3. Limit the ways in which someone can showcase they're a mentor both to protect people from their own expectations, and the Mentors from those same expectations.

This is what my posts in this thread are all about. Hostility. I'm not being hypocritical, I'm telling you outright I'm being hostile. Personal attacks? Not so much, but hostile? Sure, I am. Like I said, you think I'm being personal, but that is your problem. I can't be any more honest. But what we see as being hostile is just me being extremely blunt. I don't regret being hostile, as being nice took me nowhere.

And yes, you do sound like you're pretty self-righteous as much as you think I'm childish. But, like I mentioned quite a few times in this thread, I don't care. I'm done with the community altogether. If you wanna keep going, go ahead, I'll stop here as we're not gonna solve anything.

It's not that I'm hostile to everyone, it's just that I'm blunt, ergo hostile, period. The difference resides in that me being like that doesn't depend on the other part. It's not a rant really, it's me not giving any flying eff.
If you're so over the community and beyond caring about it... why are you here?

To be honest I would be on your side with a lot of this if you didn't go at the OP and then other people so hard.

I think people are too hard on mentors. I hate the "a mentor kicked my dog" meme, I think it's overplayed into stupidity. I think there are people out there who think they're entitled to the time and effort of another player beyond what is reasonable. SE isn't paying me to wear that crown, I'm not spending a full lockout in Shinryu EX when more than half the party can't consistantly make it past the first Tidal Wave. I also don't think bad mentors are as common as everyone complains they are. You don't notice the good or passable players, the bad ones stand out.

I think the playerbase expects far too much from mentors but on the other hand I think SE expects far too little, the large gap between these two places creates all this drama and it's stupid. SE should be clarifying this but they aren't because they like money and never want to do anything that will offend or alienate any part of the playerbase.

So yeah - don't act like people are getting on your case because your opinions are so controversial. I am not asking for you to sugarcoat anything, just asking for you to show a basic level of respect for your fellow players which you clearly haven't been doing. You aren't edgey, you aren't cool for not caring about all this - you're logged on to the OF like the rest of us when you could be somewhere else. You care. That's fine! So does everyone else here to some extent... just don't be a total (insert expelative of your choice here) about it and you're fine.

Amen to every last bit of this as well as the post it was attached to.

I'm the sort of player that will do my best to teach, be humble if I can't remember a fight (which does happen) and explain that "Sorry, but I can't remember this fight, so let's learn it together". Generally speaking I don't have issues when I mentor. I had to kick someone as a mentor though, when mentor roulette gave me Garuda Ex with a WAR that had like level 15 gladiator (this was back in HW when cross-classes revolved around levelling other classes, rather than the role skills we have now). But we tried to do it without needing the tank swap. We just could not do it, so the tank had to be removed after about 5 attempts. Other mentor then swapped from DRG to tank, and we managed to 7 man it for the most part (some other DPS joined when Garuda was at about 5%).

Yeah, that's something else I'd like to see. A warning would not go amiss.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.
