Yeah HZD doesn't focus solely on episodes with one monster that takes 45 minutes to kill, and it has much better combat because it's less about using a very ungainly weapon and more about traps or tactical use of mobs and elemental weakness. But it takes a lot from MH and improves it; the triplines and rope caster are far more useful and strategic than any tools in MH, and its able to do a lot more with its world. Why cart when you can program a ride?

I'm not a fan of the gameplay either. That particular genre always seems to try to do too much, and ends up making the game too complicated to get into a flow state for most people. God Eater and Freedom Wars suffer from the same issues too. The JP focus so much on packing the game with a bunch of different systems that they don't nail the core gameplay nearly as well as they think they do. It's kind of why they never really designed a decent FPS till Splatoon, for example. There's always stuff like sharpening weapons, or meta gear solid's stupidly complex QTE flow system.

And honestly, can we all assume people are being subjective when they talk about stuff like this?
