The way the fees are presented is unsurprisingly convoluted (gg SE). I've read previous posts in this thread so I understand it now... At a glance, however, it appears they reduced the price from 12.99 to 9.99 and then once more to 6.99. At least these were my first confused and misled impressions... Also, 3$ per additional character is ludicrous. Is this their attempt to make up for the losses in reducing the base fee...?

It has been that way since the beginning of time.

It also sounds like quite the stupid way to make up for losses since it is completely voluntary payment and no one here is going to need it to experience the game.

it was always $3.00 per character.
they always had it as two payments. your base and your character payment.
you can have no characters and still pay the base price with 0 access to the game.

The 3$ cost for additional characters is the same price like last year.
I think this is ok (we need only 1 char anyway), but where are the retainers we can buy for 1$ ? I need storage place.

It all comes down to greed. How many kilobytes of data including backups do you really think it takes to store 1 character? Just a guess but likely less than 1 megabyte, my free email accounts could store around 2,000 ffxiv characters each.
