I'm thinking about leveling a brd or a mch, and I'm just curious how they compare to each other. I know brds have party buffs, but what do mchs bring? And how are mchs dps wise right now? I haven't seen threads about them in a long time.

mch has party buff too (weaker compares to brd), dps wise at the same playing level mch does more.
Both classes are pretty darn good right now. BRD has higher Utility but lower DPS. MCH has lower utility but higher DPS. Both bring enough party support to be viable in the raiding scene.
There is one issue to consider with MCH though. Much of the playerbase feels that the job's mechanics are clunky. The job is also VERY ping reliant due to how the Wildfire skill works. MCH with high PING will always do lower DPS than ones with low ping assuming similar skill level.
It's not alone the ping the issue, it's sometimes from the game itself, or at least the server.
If this last is in a bad mood, you juste can't play MCH. That's why I'm playing both MCH and BRD, because MCH is so clunky, sometime you need to change to not explode in front of your screen...
However, MCH is one of the best dps now, maybe the best. But you need to be lucky to be able to play it well.

Bard is good and easy to pick up
MCH is just as good but a little harder to get into
MCH has some sweet goggles too
Bard and Machinist put out roughly the same numbers on paper, but bard brings significantly greater party support and is far easier to play. Machinist is hindered by some of the worst job design possible in my opinion; it's clunky, awkwardly paced, optimizing it makes zero sense, and it's extremely regimented. It's a damn shame too, because I like the aesthetic and it has a lot of cool concepts on paper.
TBH if you plan to bring one of them into raids you might as well become proficient at both of them since they share gear except for the weapon and being good at both ranged job will offer you a lot of flexibility when it comes to finding a raid group in the future.
Mr. Happy did a great 4.2 comparison video on these two specifically
https://youtu.be/9kgpyZQHa7Q
That video is awful. He doesn't play MCH, doesn't know how the rotation works and he got some very obvious ability info wrong (Overheat value). BRD bias shines through that video so hard that it's basically just bashing MCH. Incredibly sloppy work for the kind of platform and audience reach he has.

And I love commentaries like "Bard has all those sweet party bonuses, machinist isn't as party friendly."
Seems like people really don't understand how works teamworks...
