The point is that personally I would want a tank where I am NOT in melee combat. We already have three flavors of that. Which unfortunetly as much as I don't like pets normally would mean having a tanking pet type tank. Though I believe Rift has pulled it off, if I recall it was the wizards necromancer soul tree.

Well, the way XIV is set up it would have to be in melee range and auto-attacking would be a thing at the minimum. The other thing is that pet tanking is difficult to set up in this game, you can’t heal pets from the party list and have to tab around or make a TT macro. If you have a spellcaster for the tank, all the spells need to be cast very swiftly to not interrupt and be unreliable. The other thing is in order to really balance it with existing tanks, they’d have to share armor (same problem with healers, casters and ranged). A mage wouldn’t really feel right dressed like that. Not to mention, if it you put it on caster gear, instead of having no tanks to compete with for gear in a lot of content (or max 1 other), you’d have to share odds with however many casters are in party. I just don’t see it working here.

Depends on how it is built I think. For example if you showed the...well let's just go with 'golem' coming from the mage as kind of a projection you could solve both the armor and the healing. Simply put, have the golem be the same health as the tank, and healing the tank heals the golem. As for the spells, well like I said you could base it around the fact it's a projection. So some attacks could come from the 'golem' and some from the magic user. You could even have channel attacks where the mage channels an attack into the golem that explodes out for damage, but still allows the golem to attack via abilities or even pet bar.

It's a rough idea, sure but if you can have a SMN use Titan to sorta make up for a tank dropping out a more refined job could certainly work.
