Has anybody actually made friends through FFXIV?

A few, yes.

Ironically the people who stuck around and aren't flaky are those I've met through the FFXIV forum or the other sites I happen to post on. It was the same back in WoW, too. My experiences with people I met through the actual game haven't been nearly so pleasant, unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses thus far, and I definitely encourage more responses from others if you want to add to this. It's pretty interesting to see from the responses that I've seen thus far that friendship through MMOs is possible. I did not...I thought friendship along those lines was more similar to acquaintances, but recent events are making me re-evaluate this. Shame I didn't get into MMOs until last year...this thread might not have been needed had I jumped in around 2012. Again, thanks for the responses thus far and again, definitely would love to see more responses to the thread. Liking seeing everybody's view points on this.

I've made three really good friends online. One I met in TERA 5 years ago (time flies)... he lives in Europe though so there is not a lot we can do in terms of meeting up anytime soon. Love him to bits though.
I met my current BFF through FFXIV because she thought my character was cute. Go figure. We've been really good friends for almost 2 years now talking basically daily. There is plans for her to come visit me pretty soon! And last but not least, I was once insulted by a Lalafell standing in Quarrymill for stealing his glamour. Couple of months pass and we figure out we live really close to each other and now we go out to dinner and hang out every once and a while and it's great fun.


These three are the people I go to for everything. I couldn't imagine living without their friendship at this point. And what I've learned from all three of these encounters is that friendship is always where you least expect it. The people I go out of my way to be friends with never end up being people I want to spend time with, while the random people who give you a passing comment are the ones that stay.

Met my now-husband through FFXI. Most of the group I play XIV with I met in XI as well, many of whom I've met in person. A couple of those friends I actually see yearly, because either I or they travel to see each other, and I count them among my very best friends. It's definitely possible to make lasting friendships through MMOs!

I have. I know you ask about XIV, but my biggest success was back during the Ragnarok Online era. I've made plenty of friends that ended up in an IRL friendship (and relationship at some point). Some of them I see them from time to time, but they live in different states at the moment. In XIV I've made a lot of friends, but only few of them were long lasting. They also have their lives and barely play anymore but we usually chat through SMS or other means, so it kinda extended to outside the game. I've been invited to visit them in the States whenever I travel to their country.

I had a whole bunch of friends in 1.0, back when it was actually beneficial to make friends; I made one friend in 2.0 a while back.. Flying solo again currently.

Yeah I've made plenty of friends through this game. Australian and a lot of my FC are here too, if I'm in town during the holidays perhaps we meet up for dinner and drinks. Going to Fan Fest this year with a friend I met through the game.
