I had this happen on Mateus once when I was healing it with Tridus. Me on WHM, them on SCH. The first time we weren't prepared for me to be tanking it and I died only to have it rip through some other people. The next time in party chat (after our tank prooved unresponsive) we planned it out.

I popped a Medica II again (even though this time people didn't really need it as adds went out) and then the NIN even Shadewalkered me! Only time I have seen a WHM Shadewalkered, much less to an actual, functional end.

I understand a fair bit more about the game, particilarly about dps, now. The idea that even with Medica II ticking I was able to hold the add the whole time with Presence of Mind Stone IV spam off of what should have been 5 DPS is mildly troubling. I can only assume the first time the NIN Shadewalkered the tank (to no avail) and none of our dps (other than perhaps the NIN) were particularly good.

Either way it makes for a fun story, especially whenever "WHM tank best tank" comes up - at that point I was the best tank our party had thanks to a combination of incompetence, SCH/NIN teamwork and good ol' WHM OPness.

My story today is a Kugane Castle in which we saw 3 sets of adds from each boss. I... did not know this was a thing.

The worst part was that I was DPSing on RDM so I know half of our dps was pretty good. The BLM in our party did a whole lot of nothing, moving around and caasting spells in a weird, nonsensical order. The healee barely dpsed and the tank spent the entire run in Shield Oath.

I looked them up during the first boss in contacts and they were all from Balmung. Not sure if that was coincidence or if they were a premade since Balmung is so big but I thought it was better to shut up than offer advice and get kicked out into another 22 min queue.

Still, longest Kugane Castle of my life by far.

Fun quick run though. I got tired of VA quickly, would rather have done DS/WCoM but the chat was honestly just hilarious. Dark blue is DRK MT, light blue is PLD, Green is the other DRK and red is random DPS/healers in the raid.

This kind of chat is why I love 24-man so much. With that many players, you get SO many different playstyles, skill levels, douchebaggery. It's lovely!

What I've learned from Alliance Roulette is the main tank is one who has agro, lol. But I just love when two tanks both say, "I'm the main tank" Everytime I see it, I just immediately envision two cornfeed, meatheads standing up, pointing their thumb at themselves with a cheeseburger grin and saying, "I'm the main tank" in unison. ... and then both die, and the third tank just gets things done!

    I have a joke : A PLD, a WHM, a DRG and a BLM (me) walk into a bar.

The DRG doesn't die mind you but the PLD doesn't have shield oath on, uses every CD he has before each pulls when he can, never talks and runs around like a headless chicken.

The WHM cries in despair, the DRG tries to do his best, the BLM plays dead.

    The end.

Speaking of alliance roulette, I often forget that some of the best ones are filled with the procrastinators trying to get their daily done before the reset. Red eye alliance roulette!

Had a nice one in Fun Scaith last night. I always have 'in progress' checked when I queue, and this one trusted me into an instance where several players from all three alliances have raged quit. Several players from my party tell me about the situation, and I asked one simple question? "Were mechanics explained?"...

    no
    nope...
    not even in the slightest
    no siree!

    ...were my immediate responses.

So I explained all of Doom Gazes nasty insta-kill mechanics, and the fight was smooth as silk after that. No one even died. I proceeded to explain the other bosses as well. There was another wipe on Diabolos Hollow that had me reiterate some of his mechanics, but I simply have to reflect on how utterly late it was at this point in the night.

Everyone was really happy that we weeded out all the toxic players, and everyone was having a really good time learning and doing the fights. I got a lot of thank yous and a full round of comms from my party, and all it takes is just taking a minute to explain mechanics.

Tanks do know that Shadewalker has a 2 min CD?
Him posturing up like that is inexcusable, but don’t forget you also have diversion .

Last I checked, you weren't able to use the Contacts menu inside an instance. You get the currently unavailable error message. Was this a very recent change? Like within the last week? Up until now, I've only ever been able to look up a completely silent party member's server after leaving the instance and not during it. I suppose I could search the name on the Lodestone and make an educated guess based on the results that show up, but who has time for that in the middle of a run?

This made me giggle, and also have a bit of genuine confusion. Is Zalera's population or social interaction so small that 3 people forming a pre-made seems like something that would only be likely to come from a larger server like Balmung? I can't imagine a server having so small a population that forming 3-man pre-mades for dungeon runs is uncommon. I tend to run roulettes solo more often than with friends, but only because when I ask my FC most people have either done them already or are in the middle of other things. I always ask first though, and even pimp out fast healer queues to them, so it's definitely not uncommon that I'll go in with at least one other friend.

The other week I did a roulette Guildheist as tank and got the poison rose one (don't know the name). I clearly stated to all that this was my first time and still new to tanking despite Guildheists being rinsed within 5 minutes; I still wanted to be sure everyone knew. Anyway, no mention of tips or mechanics offered up to me. So, what do you do when there's a massive cloud of poison? You move out of it. I spent the next 10 minutes running around like a headless chicken trying to stay out of the poison whilst trying to pick up the adds. It was messy to say the least, how was I to know I'm just meant to stand in the clouds and not move?! No one offered up pointers.

So we do it anyway, no one died, all good. I say sorry for the mess and again it was my first time, and asked for tips. A mentor, of all people, says something in German?/another language but with the word tank in it, so obviously this is aimed at me, despite my communication being in very plain English. So I ask again to clarify and offer tips/feedback. I get "was w/c". So basically my tanking "was crap". before I could reply he was gone, and unfortunately from another server so couldn't /tell him to elaborate or offer something slightly more constructive or ask why he is even a mentor.

I was very much appalled at the behaviour of this particular mentor and wish I had kept a name. It's frustrating when you're trying to learn the role! Anyway, hasn't put me off as I know there's a minority that just can't help themselves but be rude.

Are you sure that's what that meant, and not something else entirely? You said they didn't clarify...I looked it up myself, but apparently, w/c means water closet, which is a weird slang that's I've never heard of (but apparently is a thing) that means bathroom. As in, they were in the bathroom, so they couldn't really answer your question. I dunno...I'd be wary about assuming things in different languages.

Yes that was my thought process that it means toilet/bathroom. But it was in conversation and there was no break between me asking to know what he said in English. That's what led me to think it was an insult to answer "how was my tanking". I can completely see where you are coming from though and may need to take it as a miscommunication due to language.
