So the healer refused to use protect and didn't heal the tank... and you kicked the tank? lolHorrible run in Fractal HM this morning... healer didn't use protect and after not healing the tank the tank died and I'm left tanking on SAM... the tank requests protect after the first wipe... the healer refuses saying they didn't need protect... the tank then refuses to tank and will only dps... leaving me to tank again... finally kick the tank.... new tank comes and we clear... I was playing with children... and the brd was single targeting and not using any songs
The tank refused to do anything when it came to the last 3rd of the run... the healer at least kept me alive... at that point the tank was holding the dungeon up more than the healer even tho they were both garbage

Situations like this are why I tend to heal most of my roulettes now. Ever since Stormblood came out, the quality of healers I have put up with went down massively compared to Heavensward.Horrible run in Fractal HM this morning... healer didn't use protect and after not healing the tank the tank died and I'm left tanking on SAM... the tank requests protect after the first wipe... the healer refuses saying they didn't need protect... the tank then refuses to tank and will only dps... leaving me to tank again... finally kick the tank.... new tank comes and we clear... As a general observation related to this, since you're not the first person I've seen say this... I think part of this perception of healer quality is due to a shift in tank behaviour this expansion, which bleeds over into how well a healer appears to be doing. I've noticed that many tanks in 4.0 have developed a "dps stance only" mentality, or at least far more so than in 3.0. This makes it so that some tanks require a lot more effort to heal, and that can make it look like the healer isn't doing their job especially if they're just an average healer. As an example, last week I had one EX roulette where I barely needed to heal a Dark Knight in i340 gear, and then my next run in the same content the next day I had to stay on top of healing a better geared i370 Dark Knight or there was significant risk of death. I think the first Dark Knight was probably in tank stance the whole time, so there's probably a happy medium between the two where the first could have dipped into dps stance more and the second could have used tank stance more, but I personally would rather the first tank than the other one any day. A tank that lets me actually dps instead of babysit their health bar is worth a commendation in my book.

I feel like the ever-increasing number of different skills might make it harder for an "okay but not great" healer to keep up, too? More complicated assortment of spells available means that the fight difficulty is planned with all those skills in mind, but not everyone is remembering to use them?

Timing and use of defensive cooldowns separates the good tanks from the bad ones.As an example, last week I had one EX roulette where I barely needed to heal a Dark Knight in i340 gear, and then my next run in the same content the next day I had to stay on top of healing a better geared i370 Dark Knight or there was significant risk of death. I can agree with that too, although I don't think it's the only factor.
I had another dark knight a couple week ago (what is it with Dark Knights lately?) who wasn't using a single cooldown in Doma Castle for the first two pulls, and even though they were in tank stance the entire time they were super hard to heal. Their hp was dropping to 50% from full immediately after they pulled with a pre-cast Adlo in place, and I had to blow all my stacks on Lustrate on the first pack, and then use Dissipation in order to get through the colossus mob on the second. I asked them to use cooldowns after that second pull, which they gave me a hard time about (something along the lines of "don't need cds in <70 content") but they grudgingly obliged anyway and started to use Rampart. And only Rampart. But even that was night and day with how much easier it became to heal them. They were still a bit squishy, but not to the point where I was worried about them dying anymore.

I'd love to meet up with you in game - we'd have a great time chatting. lol
You keep hitting the nail on the head when it comes to tanks.
A great deal of it is just bad habits and "mob mentality/pressure".
But it goes deeper than that honestly.
Cool downs are just a minor annoyance. It's a mindset at best in my honest opinion.

I went into 50/60 roulette, the dungeon with the Demon door boss where you have to match them,
I'm met with a tank who seemed scared to pull more than 2 mobs so I said "pull a little more you can manage ^^"
"sure ^^ I'll try"
I also said I have goad so feel free to Aoe a little, even striking a little tiny convo turns out they were new to tanking, I offered little tips like, "get a feel for your healer and dps and see if you're able to pull more using your own judgment" "Okay thank you ^^"
He tanked pretty well and only picked up as the run went along, I wished him good luck with tanking and gave him a Commendation.
I think its pretty rare to find people who are willing to not take offence, I once had an fc member say " I'm playing the character and I don't want to look stupid" obviously hostile manner in response to me telling him he should use Ninjas aoe spam with large amounts of mobs (maybe 6 mobs that don't die fast) he would use Doton then use single target rotations -shrug-
Bit of a mix of happy and negative story xD but the tank made me smile
edit :Oh we were PLD, SAM,WHM,BLM in case anybody wondered
