What Does Your Character Mean to You?

How do you relate to your character? If you have multiple characters, what does each of them mean to you?

Some possibilities:

• Is your character as an extension of yourself in the game? Have you created your character to resemble your look in real life in some way?
  
  
• Is your character an ideal version of yourself?
  
  
• Is your character who you wish to be? Have you thus created your character in some way based on how you wish you looked?
  
  
• Do you have a number of characters each representing some aspect of your personality?
  
  
• Does your character resemble someone important to you in real life?
  
  
• Do you see your character as a person whom you control, who is distinct from yourself, whose story you are constantly shaping through your various actions, like how an author shapes the stories of their characters?
  
  
• Is your character nothing like you, both personality-wise and appearance-wise, and yet you inhabit your character and find it fun to be someone so completely unlike you in real life?

Your sixth option would be how I view my characters.

As it started with WoW RP, my character's personas have been carried out to other settings, including this one. Where they share names, I may try to rationalize why they have such names. They each have a story, a distinct personality, some of my traits (penchant for art, or cooking, etc...), but they are not representations of myself, nor are they my extensions. They are characters with which I build and explore stories with.

And to be mean to. Can't forget about the trials and tribulations they all face.

My character (his name to be more specific..) is a reminder that I have an idea for an RPG game (which I’ll probably never make..) in which he’s the main character. I made him with a more confident version of me in mind.

My character isn't really representative of myself in any way and is the vision of what I wanted my XIV protagonist to be, complete with a backstory and all.

I honestly never found myself this invested in my other MMO characters, as they were simply an avatar to me.

It sounds a little narcissistic but I usually give characters in games the same features I do (same hair colour, eye colour, hairstyle etc). It lets me project onto my character and relate to them more. I've fantasiad several times but eventually settled on Lalafell because it's more or less an exaggeration of how I am.

Nowadays I just run about in a Moogle costume so I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make.

Hmm. Good question. I'd say my character is an attempt at extending my favorite game. She's supposed to be the daughter or Squall and Rinoa from FF8.

My character is an elf.... because I always play and elf in MMOs. No real reason beyond that I find tall and lean to be more aesthetically pleasing. That and why play a human in a fantasy RPG?
I also have a Lala-moogle alt.... because moogles are adorable.

That isn’t narcissistic at all, and it’s pretty common for people to do that. Now if you look at your character (who resembles yourself) and you fall in love with it... that’s narcissistic.

OP: Option six. My character is more of an extension to his FFXI counterpart, but he’s his own identity completely. I try to keep him as authentic to the personality I created for him.*

*This only permits anything main story related, I don’t roleplay with Akashi.

My character is just a vassal to do things. Its just a game. He looks mildly like me because I gravitate towards like things.
