That looks the back of the wall-mounted bookcase that they floated lower.

The back of the book case isn't smooth like that. I believe that was the back of the eorzea maps you're looking at.

The map isn't that thick, but on closer inspection it looks like it might be two of them placed front to front so both sides of the wall are wood. Four of them actually, since you'd need 2 per side to get that height. They did a really good job hiding the seams if this is the case.

You're right about the bookshelf. It's also too thick now that I've taken a look at mine in game.
