My experience is that it is not just samurai; a lot of dps players don't AoE like they should regardless of class.

It's worth wondering if this wasn't all started by the OP seeing one bad Samurai player in a dungeon run and drawing out an assumption...
Caveat: Samurai is the one class I have never unlocked on any of my characters. So I cannot speak for how it plays, at all. But I'm seeing a whole thread full of samurai players noting how well they manage their AoE and that makes me wonder if this issue is even real...

Honestly I've been running into way too much SAMs, BLMs, BRDs, and use to run into RDM all too happy to focus down one mob during big pulls, and either Pulls the mob while I'm trying to kite all the mobs in a current area or isn't helping killing things fast enough before they overwhelm the healers MP and kill me. Fortunately the latter was mostly when I was using older armor and isn't a problem as of currently but still I keep running into players trying attacking things before I got all the mobs in an area.
Also as I saw with some of the other people here say about SAM's AOE, I'm kinda glad I've been doing similar through just trial and error and seeing whats the most efficient, that is doing hybrid single combo into AOE combo.

This is the real deal right there. How many RDMs have I crossed paths with that would never Scatter with a crapload of mobs around. They've got the easiest AoE rotation (?) of them all by far. Let alone using Moulinet.

No, it's a real thing, and it's not just with SAM. I've seen BLMs using Fire IV during huge mobs, DRG not using their aoe. It's just the player really, not the job. It's worth wondering if this wasn't all started by the OP seeing one bad Samurai player in a dungeon run and drawing out an assumption...

And people wonder why other players farm Eureka for weekly tomes instead of dungeons, despite it's divisive reputation. #Thinking

I always AoE if there are 3 or more mobs unless out I'm out of TP and Invigorate is on cooldown (which happens quite a bit because Samurai AoE eats TP like crazy). I'll also single target at times if there's a weak mob I can dispatch quickly or if the tank/healer are new/undergeared so they aren't being pummeled too heavily for an extended period of time.
I will also use a single target Hakaze > Yukikaze to get 3 sen so I can get 60 Kenki for more Kyuten spam.
I will say Sam AoE can be problematic with larger mobs. For example, in Continuum Hard if the tank pulls both minotaur and chimera, my AoE might end up only hitting one mob because of the poor range, especially for our come attack.

Sam AoE can be a bit clunky if the mobs aren't positioned right.
You're switching between a cone and a radial AoE, so if they're not quite close enough, you end up moving all over the place to try and hit as many as possible.
That said I will always try to do the AoE combo, and I don't usually find TP to be an issue. I usually run out of TP once a pull, and a single invigorate is typically enough to keep me going.
One thing I will point out is that only be using some single target combos will Sam get it's 10% damage and skill speed buffs, so you're likely to see a few single target attacks anyway.

I have been using a Samurai a lot as of late and I always use AOE since I have a lot of them. It does drain TP a lot faster though so I sometimes will switch to a single target.
Have you guys ever noticed that [CLASS] players don't use their [ABILITY] in [SITUATION]? Dude, crazy, right?
