Selling items on the market board is intrinsically competitive. If you have two items listed on the market, one each from a different player, both players are competing to sell that item.

Crafting to sell items is, as well, competitive. The person who can craft items the fastest or cheapest has a competitive advantage over someone who can't.

Crafting and earning gil are quite a big part of the game, whether you care about it or not.
