Really going to have to agree with more facial options if we have to use preset faces. For sake of space and time I focused only on female faces, but if anyone would like to do the same for the male faces that would be great! (warning: long post)
For the comparisons of what we have now I stuck with the default options except for Elezen and Au Ra (changed hairstyle to get a better look at the Elezen faces and hair color on the Au Ra to see their eyebrows better).

To be blunt: there's a pretty big disparity between which races have a lot of face diversity and which ones don't. Midlander Hyur women and Au Ra women appear to have the largest differences in their facial options. In the case of Hyurs this seems to be a choice of how old/mature you want your character to appear, where with Au Ra they seemed to try and convey different personalities with the faces. Regardless, this means that the face you choose has a lot more weight in how your character looks if you play either of these races.
Whereas there doesn't seem to be a similar thought process in the other face designs at all:
- The Miqo'te might as well have three faces, not four (since faces 2 and 3 are almost exactly the same, just one has markings and the other doesn't).
- Highlanders might as well just have two faces considering how similar their features are. The only big differences are that face 2 has wider, "more innocent" looking eyes and face 4 has a slightly different nose structure. You could argue about chin shape, but overall the general aesthetic is damn near identical no matter what face you choose (unless you pick face 2 to make a "softer" Highlander).
- The Lalafell I think are pretty self explanatory. I think the key to diversity with their faces is letting them have several facial feature options rather than trying to manipulate eye and cheek shape like the other races. That being said, I don't see why we couldn't have a bit more variation for their eyes.
- The Roegadyn are a harder call for me. The differences in their faces are rather subtle, but they're definitely there. When I look at them together I do see 4 different women, but they seem to suffer the same issue that Highlanders do: they're all in the same aesthetic. It's hard to make anything other than a sultry Roegadamme. Which there's nothing wrong with that: they're gorgeous.
- The devs just hate Elezen women, apparently. There are very, very subtle differences between the four faces, but unlike the Roes they're TOO subtle. Elezen women basically have two faces to pick from: they just get to decide whether makeup is pre-applied or not. This race/gender combo is probably the one that needs more options added more than any other combo in the entire game.
That and overall it would just be nice to see more of a thought process I guess between the races? Like why can't we make an older/elderly looking Au Ra woman but we can do that with Midlanders? Their choices just seem a bit willy-nilly as things currently stand.
