You can remove materia yourself, the higher the grade the lower the success chance, WITHOUT destroying equipment. Pretty sure you learn it rom Mutamix.

know this and have used it. Only reason I brought it up is cause it's 100% chance to remove the materia and if you don't care about the equipment but do care about the materia, there ya go
