Should items previously tied to physical purchases become available in-game again?

This topic came up in the catacombs of the PVP forum, and since few people ever go there, I thought it would make a good topic for General Discussion to see what the larger community thinks.

Previously, there were exclusive items that were tied to purchases made outside of the game. Many of these things aren't available anymore or their codes have expired.

For those that were late to the party, what do you say to them -- tough luck? Or would you like the opportunity for players to be able to get them in-game again?

(For the purpose of this discussion, I won't say make them available on Mog Station because that's a whole other can of worms I don't want to open).

    Examples include:
    - The Goobue, tattoo and Chocobo barding from 1.0 (a 2.0 pre-order? I don't know)
    - The carbuncle plushes
    - The mail moogle
    - The Odin Zantetsuken emote
(and in time, things like the Shiva emote, Nidhogg minion, Hraesvelgr minion)

If you do think they should be purchasable in-game, how would you make them attainable? Through achievement points? Tied to achievements themselves?

If you don't think they should be purchasable in-game, why do you feel that way? I'm genuinely curious.

    Let's hear it!

"We want bunny suits for guys!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Ishgard housing!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Viera!" -- OK! ✅
    "We want Cloud's motorcycle!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Blue Mage!"-- OK! ✅
"We want the ability to earn past Feast rewards!" - HAHA no that's sacred.

As much as I want the old achievements/titles and tattoo and mounts from 1.0 - I never played the game as it wasn't on my radar at the time - due to it's horrible reception and the fact that my computer would never have been able to run it at the time. I didn't put in the work or dedication to be a player back then, and so why should i be able to get them now? Just because I'm a mount fiend and want all of them? that's not a good enough reason. sure we all want everything but should we be able to get everything? Not in my opinion. There's a reason things are exclusive. Let's keep it that way. If everyone has everything then everyone is the same and then what's the point.

As the owner of many in-game items that came with real life merch, I would say they should be added to the Mog Station if they’re going to be made available at all. Perhaps at half the price the merchandise cost. SE added these items to merchandise to make more sales, most likely. These were made specifically to make money.

No, I don’t believe the masses should be able to get the carbuncle minions by ingame means. You snooze, you lose.

If an item is listed/sold/made available as a 'limited' item, then no, it shouldn't be made available again, elsewise. Sometimes they do say that they reserve the right to make them available again, but I don't think that always happens? And even though I don't have these things, if I was one of the people who bought/worked towards something that was exclusive, to have it eventually become not-exclusive would make me upset, and reasonably so.

Things like primal mounts were never exclusive - and they make them easier, later.

Things like the 1.0 items show that someone was there, put in that time and work. I want tattoos, sure, but only if they're distinguishable, because I understand why 1.0 players want their trophies, and I don't begrudge them.

I think they should be made obtainable via other means at some point after the merchandise codes have expired (1~2 years, with 1 year being the minimum, 2 years being the maximum). I am not a fan of timed exclusivity; I don’t think there’s any justifiable bragging rights about “I was able to pre-order the Shiva statue before it went OOP, and I am more entitled to the Diamond Dust emote than Little Timmy over there because he just wasn’t fast enough at pre-ordering such a limited stock item”.

This is coming from someone who owns all the OST minions except Wind-up Bahamut & Wind-up Dalamud, the Diamond Dust emote, minions from the Carbuncle and Mail Moogle plushies, and the artbooks (save for the most recent). I don’t care if people are able to buy the extras 1~2 years after I already bought them. I got to enjoy them for longer, and I got external merchandise out of it (the Carby plushies are my absolute favorites~). It doesn’t matter to me if they’re made available for others through other means.

If we’re taking Mogstation out of the discussion, I think it would be great for some of the merchandise to be re-released with valid codes. Towards the end of 2017, I had a friend that wanted the Heavensward OST (and the Spoony Bard minion that came with it), but every time they checked, it seemed to be on backorder or out of stock. Another option would be to have log-in or subscription campaigns in the future, and use those items as a reward for just subscribing to the game for x amount of days during the promo period.

That being said, the 1.0 Legacy items should stay exclusive to Legacy players. Because they are from an entirely separate game, and were given to players that continued to support the game despite it being the biggest failure in SE’s history.

Just a bit of clarification on this:
    - The Goobue, tattoo and Chocobo barding from 1.0) (a 2.0 pre-order? I don’t know)
The Legacy Tattoo was given to any Legacy character just for having an account, iirc. The Goobbue was an item you received if you talked to the Wandering Minstrel in the game. I think it was time/event limited, but as I did not play 1.0, I am not 100% sure, so do not quote me on the last part. The Legacy Chocobo was given as a subscription reward during some promotional event, iirc. You had to subscribe for 90 days in order to qualify for it during the promo period. I may be mixing up the Goobbue and the Chocobo, so Legacy players, feel free to clarify.

Considering the Legacy items all came from a dying game that is completely inaccessible via regular means, and were only awarded to players who were actively supporting the game at the time, I do not think they should be up for grabs for anyone. FFXIV 1.0 and FFXIV 2.0 and Beyond are entirely separate games, so these are the only items I can justify staying limited.

I think the pre-order items you are thinking of are the Wind-up Cait Sith and the Moogle Cap (ARR pre-order bonuses). These fall into what I said before: I think they should be made available again via other means; and this doesn’t stem from me wanting the Wind-up Cait Sith—just that I don’t see the point in timed exclusivity.

No, they shouldn’t, especially legacy tatoo and gobble mount. It is a toke of appreciation from SE to its loyal fans for their assistance to make 2.0 possible.

Legacy tattoo and other 1.0 stuff, oh heck no. That was from a bygone era for those who supported the golden dumpsterfire that was 1.0, they deserve recognition (and no, the credits don't count anymore, especially now that story skip potions bypass them completely). I wasn't around from it, so I should lose out. Now, timed exclusives such as the orch rolls from pre-ordering the FFXIV OSTs. Sure, make them available (though I'd make them available either via mog station or via a re-release of codes ONLY. No in-game means). I have the orch rolls btw, so I wouldn't be gaining anything from them doing that. I doubt I'd buy any of them, but they should be made available. Especially as I'm the only one in my FC with those orch rolls, would be helpful if other FC members could grab them too!

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

Agreed, it's lame that they've introduced a second Goobue, a second Griffin, a second "behemoth" minion yet nothing for cait sith.

with the exception of cait sith’s plush & shiva’s statue, none XIV’s SE store items have ever sold out quickly. You had several years to get the carbies/post moogle, CDs, and artbooks, most were still in stock on SE’s site even up till the day their codes expired. If SE wanted to reintroduce more into the gem they could just rerelease the merch with a new batch of codes.

There were 3 waves of Shiva spread across multiple weeks, with the first wave preorder lasting a month. If Timmy wasn’t “fast enough" to get her, he didn’t want her lol
