I'm not comfortable asking people if they've accepted Jesus as their lord and savior, so I just stand on the 3rd floor balcony throwing Gideon's Bibles at people.

I personally don't see the point in sending them a tell first... the popup they get is doing just that and asking if they want to join the novice network, so what's the difference if I do it or the system itself does it?
Not that I've actually added anyone in ages that hasn't specifically requested an invite, but that's mainly because if I'm adding people I feel I should be prepared to answer immediate questions from them and lately I haven't felt like had enough time for doing more than answering questions from people already in the chat![]()

From what I'm reading here (I've never been on the receiving end of a NN invite), the difference is that the NN invite is far more obtrusive coming out of the blue vs a /tell. People are diverse, and you're just as likely to jar someone into looking for a way to block those invites as you are to find someone who's interested and accepts.
"Ul'dah can keep their dusty markets, and their streets paved in silver and gold.
Limsa Lominsa keep your pirates, and your ships covered in musty mold.
My loyalty lies with Gridania, with the Moogles and the tree spirits of old." -The Forky Conjurer

Hey, you know, maybe "people might not like me inviting them so I won't send them a tell first and will just do it" isn't really the best way to do anything.
I got slammed into the NN without even being asked, I don't even think I got an invite? I just remember it suddenly being on (maybe there was an invite and I didn't realise what it was or thought it was a help popup, idk) and that was the most jarring thing, it was like I was reading a nice quiet book in the library and suddenly the whole place turned into a nightclub with screaming everywhere.
I turned that thing off immediately and have never wanted to look back. I won't even be a mentor because that run-in with the NN just made me hate the whole process (not to mention, it was pretty much a cesspool). If people need help, I'll give it to them without worrying about a crown next to my name.

Ummmmmmmm, because the pop-up is much more annoying, and it's polite/common courtesy to just ask the person yourself?????
That's like a person handing out food samples saying "Hello, would you like to try a sample?" vs invading personal space with the samples saying "HEY YOU, EAT THIS."

I think they added the invite screen a few major patches after they released NN. Now you get a giant popup in the middle of the screen, with a picture of starting town NPCs and a sentence saying so-and-so invited you to the novice network. If you decline, you get another window which has the option to block all future invites.I got slammed into the NN without even being asked, I don't even think I got an invite? That would make sense, as this was a good year and a half ago, and the worst part was that I was... hmmm... 30-something at the time? Not exactly a sprout at the time. New, yes, but far from someone who really would need guidance I couldn't get from friends and FC.I think they added the invite screen a few major patches after they released NN. I'm glad they let people opt out of being invited now, but I really, really wish you couldn't invite someone without asking first. It's rude. I even had a bone to pick with my ex-FC leader because they thought that randomly inviting anybody without an FC to our FC was a cool thing to do. Display some basic courtesy, thanks?

Thank you, I couldn't agree more. In quite a bit of MMOs, guilds/clans/groups etc are able to just spam invites to everyone, and I don't understand why people don't know that it's super rude. It. Is. Not. That. Hard. To. Ask.I'm glad they let people opt out of being invited now, but I really, really wish you couldn't invite someone without asking first. It's rude. Thank you. I wish that they would add something like a FC invite blocker I hate getting spammed by invites.

Some people (trial accounts) can't reply to tells, though.
