i've been reading this thread for awhile now, and now i've finally got a story to contribute with.

So Fractal hard, i Q'd as NIN, and got one hell of DRK ...
the guy must have been deadly allergic to using grit, i dont mind this so much on tanks cause of shadewalker and smokescreen but he never used it once in the entire dungeon ... and then had the nerve to call out the DPS whenever he lost enmity on the trashpulls between bosses !

luckily we had a WHM with us and a SMN so the AOE dps was on point but still ..
i thought these guys were just a legend ...

I've seen a couple tanks try that and fail miserably. Not just DRKs either. Had a WAR try to full-time Deliverance once. You'd think they'd try and do something to re-establish aggro when the entire enemy list has green icons, but nope. They're too concerned about their parse to care about proper tanking.

Im going to preface this by saying that i dont intentionally pull for the tank when im on BLM. I have accidently pulled a handful of times(unpredictable start-stop tanks), but i dont do it on purpose. However, i also have pulled aggro more times then i could count in low level dungeons. Something about having an AoE spell and low level tanks not always being great about multi-threat enmity. Ive also been in plenty of groups where the tank had connection problems(or didnt like a particular dungeon), and if the healer and other DPS are fine with it, ill start pulling the dungeon. Ive BLM tanked every dungeon up to level 60, and half of the level 60 ones too. Im fine tanking my share. I know how to position enemies, i dodge the attacks that i can, and i try not to overwhelm a healer whos not used to working with someone quite as squishy.

So ill agree that in the low level dungeons it shouldnt make much of a difference. However, once you develop bad habits they can be very hard to break. So the real issue is that this player who has never done a dungeon past Hauke Manor(and thus doesnt know how rough things will get later on) has a bad habit he seriously needs to stop. Just like Shalan said.

I must admit, my general approach is Shield Oath through trash (I aren't confident enough to try and Sword Oath trash), and on bosses I start in Shield Oath, do 2-3 Rage of Halone (enmity) combos, then swap to Sword Oath and start pumping out the damage. But if I see myself losing aggro, I immediately work to try and rebuild aggro. If you accidentally rip hate off me, I tend to just think "Oops, I didn't manage that enemy very well" and blame myself, rather than the others.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

Had a fun one yesterday. Was in Skalla with another SMN and SCH and the tank left after the first mob for some reason. We started clearing the rest of the trash using the other SMN's Titan and doing some extra running around as Titan lost and regained aggro. After waiting a bit we decided to give Kelpie a try without a tank. We were able to down Kelpie without a problem. Surprisingly it didn't really take much longer than if we had a real tank. As we started working on the trash to the second boss a new tank arrived so we finished the run with a full complement but it would have been fun to see how the second boss would have gone without a player tank.

To the "mentor" DPS who went through Bardam's Mettle with my (real life) sister the other night:

Not everyone who only has one class has used a jump potion. Yes, she only has WHM because that is what she started playing a few months ago, enjoyed it, and wanted to stick with it through the whole story rather than level other classes and maybe not do as well with all of them. That's her choice. I realize that it looks suspicious for a jumper, but not everyone with just one class has used potions to get to lvl 70.

Furthermore, you have all healers and tanks at lvl 70. Rather than insulting her throughout the dungeon and at the end as well, along with accusing her of using a potion, you could have taken the same amount of time and given her a few pointers after she told you she had only done that dungeon once before and wasn't very familiar with it (in fact, she said right at the start "I'm not very familiar with this place, can we do small pulls please?" to which the tank obliged, good on them!). No one died, there were no wipes (although she failed one of the trials on the second boss but seriously, does that even really matter?).

You are, unfortunately, one of the stains on this community which is otherwise extremely pleasant to be a part of and while I don't condone insulting names, I'd be hard-pressed to say that the other party members were wrong in calling you a nasty name when you left after (again) insulting her on her healing.

I'd like to say that I can only hope you and I are in a party together one day, but the chances of that are probably very slim. I feel sorry for the truly bad healers you end up partied with.

I realize they should have just vote kicked the DPS out, but my sister didn't feel comfortable starting a vote dismissal because she's a bit shy sometimes.

Exactly. It is one thing to rip aggro in a lower dungeon..its hard for experienced tanks to keep aggro in them, never-mind new ones. Some level of ripping the baddies is to be expected. It is when someone is deliberately running ahead and pulling the mobs that it becomes an issue, and that is when the tank can either choose to try to regain control of the mobs or let you tank them and die then reestablish control. They do not have to save your butt, and the healer doesn't have to either. Its a bad habit to fall into as you said, and those lower dungeons are meant to teach you the things you need to know for when life gets hard. Everyone wants to hold healers and tanks to task, but the DPS also need that same hold. If they are being arses, call them on it and let them eat the floor. Some will genuinely be unaware and stop, and that's totally fine. We all flub. It is when they keep doing it that the issues arise.

Again with the Medica II spam...

I ran Sastasha HM yesterday for my 50/60 roulette as PLD. It was in prog 3 minutes. Pop in and healer says "why did they leave lol"

Yeah, I soon found out why.

They were waiting at the first boss door so we went in junk happened and we beat it. Then the Mob pulls start and the healer goes full ham. This reminded me of the healer I got in Battle at Big Keep a bit ago who would use Medics II like 3 times in a row as soon as 2 people were hurt, because this healer did pretty much the same thing.

Now that I think about it they might have been the same healer... their name seemed familiar and they were a lalafell as well... They were constantly running low on MP and I informed them that Medica II isn't something you spam. They ignored me. They also ignored me when I told them to stop running away if they pull hate...

I told them Medica is stronger that Medica II if you don't want to wait for the HoT. They even casted Cure III on me when I was taking a lot of damage. I told them Cure II is stronger than Cure III... They never listed to me.

This is why I wonder if I should even try to help people any more.
